I dont think the 4-4-2 is back in a sense that most teams will ever adopt it again. I think the top teams will at home because teams will sit back on them so they can afford to take one body from the midfield and put him up front. We do it quite a bit at home ourselves. It is a good option to have.I much rather the diamond 4-4-2

The top tier of football is the Champions League, the World Cup is the biggest event in world football but it's by no means a tactical showpiece or benchmark. International football is largely 'do what you can with what you've got', only in a country like Spain or Germany can a manager be tactically flexible, even then it'd take a seriously talented pool of footballers to be able to build a side that's entirely what the manager wants. A lot of the time you'll find the identity of a national team is what the youth systems have been driven towards over the course of the last 10 years, not what's actually current in modern day football. Modern day football is epitomised by club football, it's as simple as that. Using a national team to try to enforce your point is useless.
Italy and Prandelli find this post hilarious.

Spain/Italy/Brazil/Germany/Netherlands are tactically flexible sides and are the very top tier, it doesn't take a genius to conclude that I wasn't talking about Nigeria or Uruguay.

"only in a country like Spain or Germany can a manager be tactically flexible,"

That's bullshit considering Prandelli has been as flexible as fuck for the past 3 years, case in point being Pirlo playing LM in a 442, deep lying playmaker in a diamond, CAM in a 4312 and CM in a 433/4312.

Nobody is saying it's a rigid 442. Nobody ever plays with two flat strikers and neither dropping off. I call it 442 or 4231 depending on who the second attacker is. If the player is a midfielder I'll call it 4231. If he's a striker it'll be more of a 4411/442. Simple stuff man. Rooney is a striker, not a midfielder.
Then it's not a 442, why do you keep referring to it as a 442 when you're not playing 2 flat strikers, it's a 4411 then. I'm gonna presume that Cavani doesn't play off Ibrahimovic and vice versa, so that's a 442. We don't play 2 flat strikers and haven't done for a long, long while so we haven't played 442 for a v.long time so it's not been there or "back" for us.

4411/4231/451, call it whatever you want but it's not a 442. Not to mention that we actually play 4231, to say Nani/Young/Zaha/Kagawa are wingers in a 442/4411 formation is pretty silly.

You're getting silly now. You can't expect me to describe Barca as 1-2-3-1-2-2.

(a) All that matters is the midfield/attack.
(b) It's difficult to define a team by a single formation
(c) It's even more so difficult to define a team by a single formation as fluid as United or as fluid and as complex as Barca.

There's quite a difference between a "442" (what is actually a 4411) and a 4231, namely the wingers which you've seemingly decided to overlook. Like I said, Nani/Young/Zaha/Kagawa are not wide midfielders deeper in a 4411.

Hate it when ZZ starts effectively bullet pointing.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

4231/4321/451/352/4222/433/4312/4411/442 are the formations. Hardly silly when there's 9 formations to choose from.

---------Yorke------Cole-------
Giggs--Keane--Scholes---Beckham

a la '99

^^^ That is 442.

----------Van Nistelrooy----------
------------Scholes--------------
Giggs---Keane--Fletcher---Beckham

a la '03

That is a 4411, but apparently, considering Scholes is a midfielder, that changes it to a 4231 (like I said, taking not even taking into account the wide players)

----------Van Nistelrooy---------
Giggs-------Rooney--------Ronaldo
--------Keane----Scholes--------

a la '05.

That is a 4231, taking into account the wingers. I'll say it again, Young & Nani & Kagawa & Zaha are not wide men in a 442 or a 4411.

You're chatting shit, Mert. There's a quite a difference between a 442 and a 4411 considering one is the produce of the 20th century and the other the 21st and considering one is relevant in modern football and the other isn't.

It's not my fault you don't know the difference between a wide man in a 442/4411 and a 4231 which is pretty fucking simple. How you can say that Kagawa or Nani ffs are wide men in a 442 is pretty gay.

Simple stuff. Twat.

What doesn't make the likes of Nani or Young wide men in a 442, out of interest?

Because they're positioned advanced on the wings.

United have never played a '442' according to SAF. I'll still call it a 442, it's just easier and makes more sense to me.
