I think the 442 (or variations of it) is possibly on the way back. Madrid, United, City, and PSG are all massive clubs that will play two striker systems (with a back 4) this season. It's probably only viable for being clubs though, because if you're going to play two strikers every week you need a lot of strikers and goal scorers cost a lot of money in terms of wages.

Do you think the 442 will become the favored system in Europe, or is this simply a coincidence?

Real Madrid are doing it? How did they line-up on Sunday?

Us playing 442? More like 451 once Kagawa/Rooney returns + none of the respectable NTs play 442.

Isco and Oezil as interiors, Ronaldo and Benzema as strikers. Benzema was the more static/fixed of the two, with Ronaldo drifting to the left a la Henry.

After they sign Bale they'll likely move back to more of a 4231, with Ronaldo as the striker.

Rooney not in the first XI yet. If he doesn't leave, United will revert back to their usual 442 ish shape.

451 not 4411 or 442. So United are playing 451, Real changing formation and PSG only playing 442 because they stupidly dished out cash on Cavani just to ensure a marquee signing was brought in. So in reality, 2 of the teams you mentioned don't play 442 and one is playing 442 out of stupidity along with none of the top NTs playing 442.

I think we can safely conclude that 442 is not returning and never will, it has no place at the very top tier of football anymore.

Huh? If Rooney is back in the side, you won't be playing 451.

Also, United's shape hasn't been too different from previous seasons. Welbeck does a lot of interchanging between LW and supporting RVP due to Gigg's lack of an engine. If Young/Nani were fit/in form Giggs would be out of the side and United would be playing the usual shape.

United won the league last season and City will win it this season in more or less a 442 formation. It clearly has a place in in the 'top tier'.

Either a 451/4231 or a 4411, not a 442 and a 4411 is more a 451 than a 442 variant in United's case. Either way, United are too fluid a team to pin down a single formation, 451/4231/433/4411, but 442 we do not play.

The very top tier of football is Champions League/World Cup.

Pure myth that we play 442, I can't remember the last season we ever predominately adopted a rigid 442. (must be going all the way back to the early 00s.)

Nobody is saying it's a rigid 442. Nobody ever plays with two flat strikers and neither dropping off. I call it 442 or 4231 depending on who the second attacker is. If the player is a midfielder I'll call it 4231. If he's a striker it'll be more of a 4411/442. Simple stuff man. Rooney is a striker, not a midfielder.

The top tier of football is the Champions League, the World Cup is the biggest event in world football but it's by no means a tactical showpiece or benchmark. International football is largely 'do what you can with what you've got', only in a country like Spain or Germany can a manager be tactically flexible, even then it'd take a seriously talented pool of footballers to be able to build a side that's entirely what the manager wants. A lot of the time you'll find the identity of a national team is what the youth systems have been driven towards over the course of the last 10 years, not what's actually current in modern day football. Modern day football is epitomised by club football, it's as simple as that. Using a national team to try to enforce your point is useless.
