Former Birmingham City striker Christian 'Chucho' Benitez has died at the age of 27, his club have confirmed.

Benitez had just completed a $15 million (£9.77m) move to Qatari side El Jaish from Club America.

He previously represented Birmingham City in the Premier League in the 2009-10 season, scoring three times in 30 appearances.

A statement on the El Jaish website read: “El Jaish mourns the death of our new Ecuadorean striker Christian Benitez, who passed away this morning.

“We give our sincerest condolences to the family of the player. He had only recently joined the club on a three-year contract from Club America in Mexico.

“Christian played for us for the first time yesterday, during the third round of the Sheikh Jassim Cup against Qatar Sports Club.

“He did not complain of any health problems so the sudden death of Benitez is a big shock for the team, staff and family.

“In his short time here he was known for his excellent character.”

Although specific details of his death remain uncertain, fellow Ecuadorian international colleague Antonio Valencia paid tribute on Twitter.

“Brother why now. God is with you and your family,” he Tweeted in Spanish, before posting pictures of his friend.

Wow. Too young.

Hence why it's extremely rare, but it does happen as we've seen numerous times in recent years.

What a blow. I wonder if they take out an insurance policy on the death of a footballer.

How many footballers in their 20s do you know that have died from drugs? And how many do you know that have died from cardiac issues? Pretty stupid thing to say.

Fair point. Its more likely to be natural causes, but i'd still wager drugs played a part.

"Benitez... felt strong stomach pains, so he was taken in an emergency to a hospital where after a few hours he suffered cardiorespiratory failure which ended his life," the Ecuador Football Federation said in a statement on their website.

"The Ecuadorean Football Federation extends its deepest condolences to the relatives, parents, wife, children and friends of our goalscorer Christian Benitez."
