![]() Ryan Giggs is certainly one of the greatest players in the proud history of Manchester United, but is he the best? Well, that really depends on how you define "best." Most people would probably give the nod to George Best, who is widely recognized as one of the 10 best players in the history of the game, or Sir Bobby Charlton, the English legend who holds the record for most goals at Manchester United. One could make a case, however, for more modern-era players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona, who were beyond fantastic in their brief time at Old Trafford. That's the thing about Giggs, who was voted as the best player in Premier League history as part of last year's EPL 20 Seasons Awards—he's been great for so long at United, it's hard to pick anyone ahead of him, despite that in any given season of his career with the Red Devils, he may not have been the best player on the field. From Peter Schmeichel to Cantona to David Beckham to Roy Keane to Edwin van der Sar to Ronaldo to Ruud van Nistelrooy to Wayne Rooney to Nemanja Vidic to Robin van Persie, Giggs has always been there and always been great, if never the greatest. That said, his longevity, sustained excellence and ability to adapt his style as the game evolved make him one of the true greats—and maybe the greatest—in Manchester United history. |

Ask anyone who knows a lot about Man United and their history and they'll tell you the same. SAF has said it many times and he's a great football historian. Pretty sure Law is his all time favorite player. Best, Law, and Charlton aren't called the 'Holy Trinity' for nothing. |

He's not rated very highly on this forum but i'm not sure why having watched a lot of matches back from over the years, he really was an amazingly good player in the 90's. Over the last decade Scholes has been a much, much better player though tbf

Giggs is obviously somewhere in the top 10 and I would assume he is top 5 in most united fans lists. I would have scholes over him and that's pretty much it |

Giggs named Manchester United player-coach Manchester United have made Ryan Giggs player-coach, while Phil Neville is also set to join David Moyes's staff. Giggs, 39, has been taking his coaching badges and is due to attain the UEFA Pro Licence next summer. He signed a one-year extension to his playing contract in March and will combine his new duties with being a member of the first-team squad. "It's a great privilege to be appointed a player/coach," Giggs told the Manchester United website. "I hope I will be able to bring my experience to bear, having been both a player and part of the Manchester United family for so long. "It's no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career. I'm really looking forward to working alongside David and the team." Moyes, who officially took charge at Old Trafford this week, added: "I'm delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player-coach. "His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the modern game. His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I’m sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role." The Daily Mail reports that former England star Neville, meanwhile, will become one of the key men in Moyes's new set-up along with Giggs after agreeing to return to the club where he started his career. The 36-year-old, who retired from playing at the end of the season after 10 years with United and eight years at Everton, was apparently photographed arriving at United's Carrington training complex on Thursday morning. Moyes will hold his first training session at United on Thursday, with Neville reportedly set to take part. Neville started working towards his UEFA coaching badges last year and was part of the back-room staff for England's ill-fated European U21 championship effort. |

Great news! Phil Neville is apparently joining as well and if he's as knowledgable as Gary, which I think he may well be, he'll be a great addition. Giggs is and always has been a massive influence on the younger players, you always see him with an arm around a young player giving advice while strolling off at half-time etc. |
