'It was as clean as a whistle!' Whelan's astonishing defence of McManaman

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan mounted an extraordinary defence of Callum McManaman’s horror tackle on Massadio Haidara and claimed the winger won the ball ‘clean as a whistle.’

Newcastle left back Haidara, who is having a scan today, was carried off on a stretcher at the DW Stadium after a challenge that almost snapped his left leg in half, while McManaman faced the fury of visiting coach John Carver as he left the field at half-time.

The widespread condemnation that followed included calls for retrospective action by the FA, with most onlookers assuming referee Mark Halsey’s view had been obstructed.

Yet Whelan insisted Halsey had seen the incident but shared his interpretation of it.

How did you miss it? The linesman Matthew Wilkes is looking right at the collision. This picture shows his view of the incident

Lunge: McManaman's awful tackle on Haidara, which led to the Newcastle left back being taken off on a stretcher and a melee between the two benches in the tunnel at half time

Speaking to Sportsmail Online, the Wigan chairman insisted there was no need for an apology and added: ‘The first thing I would like to say is we sincerely hope the Newcastle lad is OK, and we are relieved to hear that it is nothing like as bad as initially thought. In fact, he could even be fit for their next game

‘The second thing is, our lad went for the ball and took it clean as you like. He won it clean as a whistle. After that, his momentum took him forward and he collided with the Newcastle player.

‘It looked bad to begin with, admittedly. Looking on from the stands, I thought he’d broken his leg. It brought all the memories back from the FA Cup final 50-odd years ago, when I broke my leg for Blackburn against Wolves. It was a similar situation, with the ball bouncing between two players, and I thought, “Oh no, not again.”

Not a foul: Haidara left on a stretcher but referee Mark Halsey (second left) didn't even give a free kick

‘But when you see it properly, Callum did not go over the ball. If he had done, it would have been a sending off and the most heartfelt of apologies from us. But I don’t see any need for an apology, because Callum went for the ball and got it.

'As he knocked it away, he then collided with the Newcastle lad accidentally. It was a very unusual accident but the sort that can happen in football.

‘Some of the pictures did look bad. You look at them and shudder a bit. But that’s not how it was. I am quite convinced Mark Halsey saw the incident perfectly clearly but saw nothing wrong. That’s why he didn’t even deem it a foul.

Having a look: Newcastle boss Alan Pardew (centre) fires a look at McManaman after he was substituted

‘If people think football is for fairies, it’s not. It’s a game for men and it’ s tough. Callum is a tough Liverpudlian, but I have seen him come up through the ranks, and there’s not an ounce of malice in him. He has 100 per cent enthusiasm for the game, and that’s all there was in that tackle.

‘We were concerned for the Newcastle lad when he came off, and we wish him well. We have asked about him, and the word back is he should be fit in seven to 14 days.

'I initially feared he may have broken a bone, but it is just bruising. I’m glad to hear that, but let’s have it right about Callum – he was going for the ball and he won it.’

     :redangry: :redangry: :redangry: :redangry: :redangry: DAVE WHELAN HAS LOST THE FUCKING PLOT AND I EXPECT THEM TO BE JUST AS ROUGH DIRTY AND CHEATING WHEN WE PLAY THEM IN THE REMAINING DAYS OF THE SEASON

It was a shocking challenge, but it's not as if the lad was trying to injure him. The ball was there to be won and Haidara got to it a tiny bit before.

This 'tackle' should have been a red for me, was no chance of him getting the ball and he slides into his head ffs.

He went in with unnecessary force and went slightly over the ball. Maybe not malicious but certainly reckless. I might have given him a red to try and discourage people from making wild uncontrolled challenges but the challenge from mcmanaman isn't a red card.

He was overzealous but he played the ball. Imo it wasn't obvious dangerous play so its a little harsh.

We can't punish players for the severity of injury caused by a tackle. And the tackle itself isn't that bad.

the tackle WAS that bad though, it was a leg breaker, and its these type of challenges that should be punished by more than the mandatory ban, slightly touching the wall doesn't warrant it being deemed a clean challenge

Haidara scheduled to be back in early April :laughcry: So much fucking drama over nothing. While the tackle did look horrific, there was always something in the back of my mind saying "there doesn't really look like he's done much damage there". The leg wasn't hyperextended, it looked like a nasty head on collision but when I heard it was ligament damage it surprised me.

Winner.

Dave Whelan: ‘Jewish people chase money more than everybody else’

Wigan owner Dave Whelan has claimed Jewish people chase money and that calling a Chinese person a “ch*nk” is nothing.

Whelan’s outspoken remarks were made in defence of new Latics boss Malky Mackay, who is currently being investigated for alleged racism and anti-Semitism over texts and emails he sent during his time in charge of Cardiff City.

Earlier on Thursday, one of Wigan’s kit sponsors - kitchen appliances firm Premier Range – terminated their deal with the club.

According to Whelan, he was referring to texts in which Mackay called Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan a “ch*nk” and one in which he said “nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers.”
