Mancini: I wanted Van Persie, De Rossi & Hazard at Manchester City

The Italian, who was sacked on May 14 after a disappointing 2012-13 campaign, also revealed he would have gone all out to land "extraordinary" striker Edinson Cavani this summer

Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has revealed he had targeted the signings of Robin van Persie, Daniele De Rossi and Eden Hazard last summer as the club looked to kick on following their title triumph.

Despite an agreement with Arsenal over Van Persie, the Dutchman eventually moved to rivals Manchester United, while De Rossi remained at Roma and Hazard swapped Lille for Chelsea.

The signing of the Gunners striker helped propel United to the 2012-13 Premier League title and Mancini, who was axed by City back in May, rued the club's inability to land his top transfer targets.

"I wanted to change something after winning the title, I wanted to make three big signings so the team could be relaxed," he told Corriere dello Sport.

"I asked for Van Persie, we had an agreement, I knew he was ready to make the difference. And I also suggested to sign De Rossi and Hazard. But we didn't make any move."

Former Inter boss Mancini also revealed that he had Napoli striker Edinson Cavani lined up as a priority signing during the summer transfer window, with Goal exclusively revealing that, despite City's interest in the Uruguay striker, he is keen on a switch to Chelsea.

"If I had stayed at City, I would have done everything to sign Cavani," he added. "We were close to him. He's an extraordinary player. Also Fernandinho is my choice."

The Italian also praised his replacement, Manuel Pellegrini, and insists City struggled without Mario Balotelli following his January move to AC Milan.

"We missed Balotelli's goals, but he was unhappy in England. He, like [Luis] Suarez, was constantly attacked by opponents, referees, fans. It's also true that he didn't do anything to avoid some situations.

"Our fights? It was nothing. I just got angry with Mario after a rough tackle. Thirty seconds of verbal argument and it became a matter of discussion.

"Pellegrini is a good coach, it's logical he will do a good job. The team is top."

It could have all been so different. Mancini was spot on, wanted to keep the side fresh with new signings but no, the men upstairs fucked it all up.

Aguero: Mancini did not lose the dressing room

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has defended former manager Roberto Mancini, insisting the Italian did not 'lose the dressing room' during the Blues' disappointing 2012/13 campaign.

Despite starting the season with Community Shield success against Chelsea, the Etihad Stadium side laboured in their attempt to defend their Premier League title. City finished 11 points behind arch rivals Manchester United and crashed out of the Champions League at the group phase without winning a single game.

Reports of a dressing room revolt first emanated in October following a 3-1 loss to Ajax in Amsterdam, while goalkeeper Joe Hart was believed to have clashed with his manager in the aftermath of City's derby defeat to United in December. The former Sampdoria and Lazio striker left his post a year to the day since winning the Premier League in the most dramatic of fashions; Aguero netting in the final seconds of the season to steal the silverware away from the Red Devils. And the Argentine front-man, who opened his account for 2013/14 in City's 4-0 drubbing of Newcastle on Monday evening, has stuck up for Mancini, stating the players never had a problem with the manager.

Speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo, he said: "Whenever a team isn't at its best, the press are looking for stories to explain why. "Mancini never had a problem with anyone and we got on well with him because he always had the club's best interests at heart. "The club have the right to decide whether he was going to stay or not at the end of the season, but there certainly weren't any problems from us."

Boosted by the arrivals of Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas, Fernandinho and Stevan Jovetic, the Blues will be expected to taste glory again under ex-Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga chief Manuel Pellegrini. But Aguero believes a second successive season without significant silverware should not be deemed a 'failure'.

"Not a failure, because you can't win everything," he said. "But as players we need to find a commitment to do things well. We've made some excellent signings and have to players to do great things this year. "We need to stop dropping points away from home, which made our lives very difficult. At home we've always been strong, you can feel that teams don't like coming to the Etihad because of the respect that we've built up on the pitch over the last couple of years.

"If we keep working hard every day in training then we can have a good season away, as well as at home. Then who knows what can happen?"

Love this guy  He's turned down €9m for no reason other than loyalty and love.

Mancini sorry to leave 'splendid' Galatasaray

Roberto Mancini has resigned as manager of Turkish giants Galatasaray.

The former Inter Milan and Manchester City manager took over the club last summer, but has left after a season in which his side won the Turkish Cup, but finished runners-up in the league and went out in the last-16 of the Champions League.

Mancini's predecessor, Fatih Terim, was fired after a poor start to the 2013-14 season despite having won back-to-back Super Lig titles and taken the side to the Champions League quarter-finals.

“As a coach I understand the demands of my club. When I accepted the post of Galatasaray coach the targets were different," said Mancini.

“In these eight months, though I came in during a season that had already been partly damaged, I have done my job with passion and in constant pursuit of victory.

“This was followed by Champions League qualification, the Turkish Cup and second place in the League.

“With regret, I leave Istanbul and the fans, which are both splendid. I give an affectionate goodbye to the President, the team and everyone I have worked with. They worked with talent and loyalty.”

Early reports claim that Mancini agreed to a mutual decision to end his contract early, despite the fact that his quick exit may have cost him a vast financial bonus.

Eurosport Turkey have confirmed the existence of a pay-off clause, and that Mancini will receive no compensation having agreed to leave.

The fact that he agreed to leave without compensation has already sparked speculation that the 49-year-old has another job lined up - and with the hot seat at Southampton vacant following Mauricio Pochettino's move to Tottenham, bookies are already cutting odds on the Premier League-winning manager being in line for a quick return to the English top flight.

Mancini has also been tipped to return to Lazio, where he spent four years as a player and two as a manager, taking the Roman club to the UEFA Cup semi-finals, and winning the Coppa Italia.

Don't quite understand how leaving your job is showing loyalty... Unless you're assuming he'll take the Lazio job, and this move underlines his desperation to go back to his former club?

Winner.

The guy's just turned down €9m because he's enjoyed his time there and wants to honour the club. He could have easily stuck two fingers up and took the payday but his loyalty to the employers altered his judgement.

Surely if he enjoyed his time there that much he wouldnt want to be leaving and would happily be signing a contract for less than 9million

Why are they sacking him? He's done a decent job, his employers are obviously irrational and have little faith in him if they are due to sck him, not the type of people you'd waive £9mil for
