Manchester United have applied for planning permission to erect a three metre statue of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The bronze statute will be positioned on a plinth at the entrance of what was formerly the North Stand, but has since been renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, to commemorate the manager's 25 years at the club.

The statue has been designed by Scottish sculptor, Philip Jackson, and will follow the style of Old Trafford's other long standing heroes including Sir Matt Busby and the so-called 'Holy Trinity' of George best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton.

A United spokesman said: “To be at a club of our standing for so long is truly remarkable.

“In that time, Alex has established himself as the most successful manager in British football history, winning countless trophies and creating numerous sides admired around the world for their flair and ability.

“Alex’s contribution to United has been immense and the magnificent stadium we have here at Old Trafford is a testament to his ability and success.

“The Board felt it right to take this unique step, as well as to commission Philip Jackson to create a statue to go alongside his other great pieces here of Sir Matt and the United Trinity.

“These tributes are made with the grateful thanks of the owners, board, staff, players and fans of Manchester United, for the great pleasure Alex has brought us all over a quarter of a century.”

Winner.

There will never be a manager like him in terms of longevity and to be honest I wouldn't be that shocked if he reaches the 30 year landmark

Yeh good idea. Sadly for them, it'll probably be called the DHL Stadium soon.

Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy will be amongst the most notable guests at the unveiling of a statue in honour of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford on Friday.

United commissioned award-winning sculptor Philip Jackson to create the nine-foot bronze statue which will be placed outside the stand that already bears Ferguson's name.

The precise details of the statue are yet to be revealed but Ferguson recently inspected it himself and declared himself satisfied.

Looks class close up from the side but the front-on view is quite underwhelming.
