Reds close on Allen deal

Rodgers ready to meet £15m valuation for midfielder

Sky Sports understands Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed his interest in Allen earlier this week as he looks to rebuild the squad at Anfield.

As revealed by Sky Sports earlier this week, Liverpool were preparing a bid for Allen and both clubs are thought to be in advanced talks as they look to thrash out a deal

Allen, who is away with Team GB at the Olympics, is thought to be keen on a move to Liverpool to be reunited with Rodgers.

Swansea are reluctant to lose the midfield schemer, but know they will not be able to resist a big-money offer for Allen.

Allen is thought to have a release clause in his contract and Liverpool are believed to be ready to match the £15million fee to land the Wales international.

Swansea are already looking at possible replacements for Allen with Spanish midfielder Michu poised to make the switch to the Liberty Stadium.

Rodgers is keen to get a move for Allen wrapped up as soon as possible as he looks to add the midfielder to the signing of Fabio Borini.

Michael Laudrup has revealed he won’t stand in Joe Allen’s way should the player wish to leave Swansea.

Liverpool, now managed by former Jacks boss Brendan Rodgers, are reportedly interested in the Welsh midfielder after he produced several fine displays at the Liberty Stadium last season.

Danish boss Laudrup has admitted he is yet to speak with Allen about his future, due to his participation at the Olympics, but insists if a bid is tabled the club will discuss it with the him.

"I haven't spoken to Joe since I have taken over," said the Swansea boss. "I haven't spoken to any of the three Olympics players and we have not had any contact from Liverpool.

"I am in contact with the chairman every day. We agree that if there will be an approach then we will have to talk to the player.

"We cannot just answer 100% yes or no without having talked to the player. That's a problem because he has to concentrate on the Olympics but we will have to deal with that if and when it comes to that.

"You can force players to stay but how does that help? It doesn't work like that. It's better to find a solution that suits both parties.

"You always have to be one step ahead so we have to be prepared for everything. It's not only in this case, but with each position in the team.

"When the transfer window closes on August 31 you can breathe a sigh of relief, but you only have three or four months when people do not talk about transfers because then you look ahead to January 1. It will be the same then.

"You have to think about the present window as well as the future, which will be the winter window. But we obviously want to be able to have the best possible team available."

Laudrup could easily find players in Spain who cost less than Allen but are better players. Already done it with Michu.
