Liverpool spent £100 million without Champions League football, I am sure we could if we wanted.

Liverpool got new owners who wanted to make a statement and have spent shit tons in the past. We don't have the same type of owner, we only spend what we make.

Nah Dag, remember how many injuries we get mate in midfield, it's not essential to sell him. He'd only fetch around 10m anyway, doesn't matter if it drops to 6m next year through less play time.

We have some of the richest men in the World backing the club, we make more profit than near enough every club in World football, we have made huge bids for players in the past and failed to sign them.

Not getting Champions League football costs Arsenal around 20-40mil, which is of course a dent, but it wouldn't stop us keeping all of our players financially and spending around 40mil on players.

We are more likely to sell Song because he is surplus to requirements than because we need the money.

Most football clubs have some of the richest men in the world backing them. Yes we make loads of profit, but it's a very flawed way of looking at things. We make massive 'accounting' profits, most of which come from buying players cheap and selling them on for far more. We barely break even if you don't consider player sales. Basically, the only reason we have the Emirates, stay in the CL, and make money is because Arsene Wenger is a fucking genius.

And not getting CL costs a MINIMUM of 40M. The 40M is just the money UEFA gives us plus TV revenue, assuming we get to the round of 16 at least. But you also have to factor in all the potential sponsorship money we'd pass up if we finished outside of the CL places. With our kit deal up in 2014, it represents a significant opportunity cost.

I think you are in fear of over rating Wilshere at the moment mate. He is a great player for his age, but don't forget that he was playing in a much better midfield last season than the one we have now.

I think playing attacking midfield in the reserves is a little easier as well. Of course he would probably want to play there, and he may end up world class in that position, but for now he is a top quality central midfielder.
Also, after watching many "Wilshere vs" videos, I am happy to admit I was guilty of forgetting how awesome he was. Don't get me wrong, I have always rated him very highly, but I said some retarded shit about Song being on his level.

Yes, I watched his first 5 matches for Rennes and wanked him over various blogs. Knew immediately that he would be a top player. He is such a valuable type of midfielder in today's football. He's got the tactical ability to play the holding role but you can play him as the sole holding player because he can distribute the ball vertically with one and two touches, basically negating the need to play 4231. Excellent physically as well.

It's the one problem with players who are out for so long. They either become extremely overrated (Diaby, Eduardo, etc) or extremely underrated.

Oh dear, how over rated was Eduardo? (Ramsey as well) The guy was a good finisher, but seriously, he was truly average overall.

How likely is it that we will play a 442 formation? In my opinion, we could get away with it with any two of Arteta, M'Vila and Wilshere because they are so good positionally. I remember we tried it with Cesc and Song and it was a disaster, worked much better with Denilson and Cesc (yet nobody noticed Denilson completely bossing).

The only problem is our lack of two decent wingers (assuming Podolski will play up top).

I didn't really like Cesc-Denilson pairing in 08/09. At the start of that season Denilson played as more of a box to box player, and he was getting goals and assists but we were so poor defensively because Cesc is a wanker and never held position when others went forward. The around the time of the Everton match at Emirates Denilson was played basically as an out and out DM and never went forward at all, and that's kind of where he started to get loads of stick from the fans and what not.

As for playing 442 next season, it can be done in certain matches, but I think we should be playing 433 or 4231 most of the time. A 4231 like Madrid now or the Valencia of the early 2000s might work very well against certain sides. Basically not as much possession in midfield and sideways passing to the wide players, but the wide players playing very vertically with balls in behind. More counter attacks. I think we'd be better off playing that way with the squad we have as our wide players are more striker types than playmaker types (one of the main reasons we required someone like Hazard or Gotze but those won't happen).

Poldi, RVP and Walcott will be scary with such a solid midfield.
