Aston Villa have announced that captain Stiliyan Petrov is suffering from "acute leukaemia."

A club statement read: "The Villa board received news today that our long-standing captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

"Stiliyan developed a fever following the Arsenal game last Saturday and subsequently underwent tests.

"Haematology experts confirmed the diagnosis today. We expect to learn more about Stiliyan's situation in due course.

"During this time we ask that Stiliyan's privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries.

"Stiliyan is cherished by many and he will get from Villa every ounce of love and support."

Petrov, 32, joined Villa in a £6.5 million deal from Celtic in August 2006 and has made 185 Premier League appearances for the club.

He played over 300 matches in seven seasons with the Hoops, having joined from CSKA Sofia in 1999.

The winner of the 2003 Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award, Petrov has also played over 100 matches for his national team, which he has captained since Dimitar Berbatov quit internationals in 2010.

:tremble: Terrible news.

Neil Lennon and the entire team at Celtic have offered their support to Stiliyan Petrov after hearing that he has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Aston Villa stunned the football world on Friday when revealing the results of medical tests carried out after their skipper developed a fever in the wake of their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Messages of support have flooded in for the 32-year-old midfielder in the wake of the announcement, with his former employers at Celtic among the first to respond.

Bhoys boss Lennon played alongside Petrov during his time at Parkhead and admits he is struggling to take the news in.

In a statement released on Celtic's official website, Lennon said: "We are all absolutely devastated to hear this news. As a member of the Celtic family, it is important for Stiliyan to know that he has our unequivocal support in battling against this disease.

"Knowing Stiliyan as I do, and the many obstacles he has overcome in his life to get to the peak of his career, he will overcome this one too.

"On behalf of the players and the backroom staff we send our support and best wishes to Stiliyan, Paulina and the family. We are there for them all and they will never walk alone."

Best wishes

The statement added that Lennon's coaching staff of Alan Thompson and Johan Mjallby, both former team-mates of Petrov as well, had both been left 'stunned' by the news.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added: "This is terrible news and our support and prayers go to Stiliyan, Paulina and their family at this very difficult time.

"Stiliyan was an exceptional player for Celtic and helped to bring incredible success here during the seven years he spent at the club.

"He was also one of the most popular players here, not only within the club but with all our supporters and I know that they, too will want to pass on their support and best wishes to Stiliyan and his family."

Its Acute Myeloid Leukemia that he has been diagnosed with. One of the more severe forms.

In adults under 50-55 the survival is about 40%.

He's young and will get the best treatment available. It'll be a long journey but I think he'll make a full recovery.

CANCER-stricken soccer star Stiliyan Petrov is a victim of nuclear radiation from the Chernobyl disaster, a doctor for his national team has said.

The Aston Villa captain — known as Stan — was just six when a toxic plume from the exploding Ukranian energy plant fell over Bulgaria in 1986.

Radiation in the northern area of Montana where he grew up was 1,000 to 1,300 above normal levels, according to Dr Mihail Iliev, Bulgaria’s team medic for 20 years.

But Dr Iliev, 61, said leaders of the former Communist state did not tell the population about the danger as they harvested vegetables.

He said: “It was in the late spring, the population was eating fresh radioactive vegetables and other foods. Many people who were kids back then suffered cancer because of this.

“We called them The Chernobyl Kids. Most were born in the same region as Stiliyan.”

Petrov, 32, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia after feeling tired during a Premier League game.

Dr Iliev said: “There are no other cases of such illness in this family, that is why I think Stiliyan is a victim of the old communist regime’s lack of information when the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl exploded, and the radioactive cloud came to our country.”

Chernobyl is just 650 miles from Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.

Disaster ... Chernobyl

After the disaster, Bulgarians reported seeing “a strangely- coloured sky of eerie shades”.

Radiation caused widespread genetic birth defects in the former Soviet Union.

The Union of Concerned Scientists says it will eventally cause 50,000 cancer cases, half of them fatal. Campaign group Greenpeace believes the cancer figure will be 200,000.

At the time, Bulgaria’s leaders toed the Kremlin line and kept quiet — but shipped-in uncontaminated foreign food for their own families. After the fall of dictator Todor Zhivkov, a deputy health minister and former deputy PM were found guilty of criminal negligence in misleading the public and jailed for five years.

Winner.
