For so many years the general conscious was that Arsenal had a soft center, could not see out matches and lost goals at key moments during games which once led Alan Hansen to say "I've never seen a team so susceptible and vunerable despite dominating so much" the likes of Cygan, Silvestre and Senderos have all long since departed and maybe for the first time since the invincibles Arsenal finally have a solid and settled back four. At fullback there's two quality players for each position while in the middle you have Mertesacker,Vermaelen and Koscielny all international class players who are only 26-27 all reliable with great pedigree and on top of that Djourou is more than an able deputy to play his part. Of course during our 7 game winning run we may have scored 7 v Blackburn 5 v Tottenham and 3 v Villa but the battling and resistent performances away at Anfield, Goodison and SOL mean just as much and shows a mental toughness to survive under extreme pressure the run made by Vermaelen against Newcastle typifies the Belguim's desire to turn 1 point into 3 even when he has an off day you still love him for his warrior like commitment and battling qualities.

I have to say that while its vital the club try and bring in top attacking talents I also feel that someone like Jan Vertonghen would be perfect for the Arsenal apparently he had a blinder tonight against PSV-which I will have to check- but certainly everytime I watch Ajax and see JV gracing that armband I just think to myself this guy is a proper leader and reminds me so much of Tony Adams. I know some on here feel he isn't the quickest but he certainly isn't a slowpoke either for me he has the all the qualities Kos and Verm process but on top of that only Vidic at his peak is as good in the air as this monster he wont suffer any fools gladly and for me the PL is the perfect place for someone of Vertonghen's qualities. His versatility will be extremely handy when injuries arrive he can play at fullback, centre back like he does at Ajax and with the NT he plays DM so that is something that cant be snipped at overall im a big fan and after all the spectulation linking him with a move to the Emirates I'd be mightly crushed if another club benefited from his services.

Defensive solidity is the key of going forward

Top stuff mate, took me a while to realise that was written by you Homer, though you left your own unmistakable mark on the article through your use of "conscious" instead of "conscensus" and "snipped at" over the more commonly used "sniffed at".

And yeah I agree mate, that back four - well, three of them - are are looking very solid options, you still need to choose which of Gibbs or Santos will become the LB but both work well with the other three. Improvements still needed with a goalscoring winger and another CM but otherwise Arsenal have a side capable of holding that third place for next season. Will need a lot of improvements to become a title winning side though.

Winner.

 Great work mate. It's a shame it's taken Wenger about 10 years to realise this.

Vertonghen doesn't really play DM in the NT. It's mostly Simon and Defour in CM with Witsel ahead. That's what I've seen when I've watched them play anyway. The Belgian NT is a joke at any rate, loads of players out of position, no unity, shit manager. Don't take stock of anything that happens there.

Should have thought about that when you ruined the side 7-8 years ago.

Arsène Wenger has made signing Yann M’Vila - the holding midfielder one of his summer transfer priorities.

A discovery of mine but I'm definitely against the signing.

M'Vila hasn't developed quite as I'd have liked.

Too expensive for what he does, and there are better options available. His passing isn't up the the level I'd like. Coquelin is a better footballer.
