And when one of them gets injured? Or suspended? You have nobody. With Arsenal's track record of injuries and annual complaints of having a poor squad, I think it's pretty stupid to be handing out your squad players on loan at a crucial time of the season. |

Arshavin made us worse 90% of the time when he came on, this is a great decision, means he cant come on and fuck stuff up any more. |

Then we have Benayoun who won't lose the ball as often as Arshavin and will help out defensively. |

He has set up quite a few assists this year. I dont see the point in letting him go. He is still a decent squad player to have anrond in the final run in. I wouldnt have him as a starter but he is useful enough. Arsenal are getting injuries non stop these days so I certainly wouldnt have weakened the squad at this stage |

Benayoun played better vs Spurs than Arshavin has in any game this season. |

Arsenal's heroic failure against Milan proved they should have kept Arshavin until the summer There's no pleasing some people. When Andrey Arshavin was at Arsenal, he looked disinterested, lazy and as if he wanted to leave. After getting his wish of a move back to Zenit St Petersburg, then Arsenal were hit by an injury crisis and he was needed against AC Milan. Arsenal played brilliantly and put on a heroic performance to beat AC Milan 3-0 but ran out of steam because beating the Serie A giants was never an 11 man job. You also needed a strong bench. Arsenal 3-0 AC Milan: So close and yet so far for heroic Gunners Last season, when Arsenal beat Barcelona, they brought on Arshavin as a 68th minute substitute and the Russian forward ended up scoring a late winner. I've been one of Arshavin's harshest critics because I could see he was falling well below his own standards. But to let him go mid-season seemed a crazy gamble which backfired all for the sake of a few weeks' wages. Arshavin wanted to go but no-one should be allowed to get everything they want. Imagine when Arsenal were flagging in the second half after a heroic opening 45 minutes, if they could have brought on Arshavin. Surely even he would have been interested in such an occasion. Instead, Arsenal's answer was to bring on Park Chu-Young. But in one revealing moment, Alex Song charged forward, saw Chu-Young to his right but didn't play him in and went alone and lost the ball instead. Sadly, that suggests to me that Song didn't trust Chu-Young. Arsenal's performance was heroic but it also needed something extra special at the end. Arshavin provided it last season. Arsene Wenger admitted mixed feelings afterwards. "You could say that. Recently Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is playing on flank. You always think you will miss a player. "But we missed a player like Mikel Arteta. He got concussion. We were more short in central midfield than the flanks." Even so, Arsenal still could have done with Arshavin on Wednesday night - and then sold him in the summer. |

Andrei Arshavin has returned to former club Zenit St Petersburg on a free transfer. Arshavin, who turned 32 last month, will sign a two-year-deal when his Arsenal contract expires on July 1. Arshavin said on the Zenit website: "I am very glad that it happened. I am glad to get back to the city. It's good to wear the Zenit shirt. I just want to play football. "Of course, I want to return to the national team. I do not know whether being at Zenit helps this or not. I just want to play football. And I want to do it in my hometown." He rejoined Zenit on a three-month loan from the Gunners in February last year after a turbulent year in English football but failed to rediscover his top form. The former Russia skipper joined Arsenal from Zenit for some £15 million in January 2009 after helping the club win the UEFA Cup in 2008. Arshavin made 144 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 31 times over the course of five seasons - including all four against Liverpool at Anfield in April 2009. Zenit's Italian coach Luciano Spalletti has already signed former captain Anatoliy Tymoshchuk from Bayern Munich and goalkeeper Yuri Ladygin from Greek side Xanthi as cover for Vyacheslav Malafeyev. Zenit finished second behind CSKA Moscow this season after winning the league title for the past two years and qualified for the Champions League preliminary round next season. |
