If you think history makes you a big club then Forrest is bigger than city. I bet you can't name 5 Swiss teams but I bet you've heard of FC Basel lol. it's a shit point, almost every football made nation has a standout team that most people know, it doesn't make it big.... I will back track slightly and say they are big but in the context of world football that isn't the case. South America (brazil and Argentina) produce the best players in the world, and that's the only reason we keep hearing about santos or flamengo or river plate. They are the Celtic to Argentinas spl, they are successful in a poor league. And don't say they have great players because anyone with real potential takes the first plane to Europe. |

I really shouldn't have to explain to you what constitutes a big club, this is painful it really is, you should know by now. History plays a part, a fairly big part depending on how great what the club achieved, Real Madrid's history plays a massive part because they won about 5 European Cups in a decade, but Forest's plays slightly less of a role because they only won it once. Liverpool's history plays a big part, because they won so many league titles and European trophies, Ajax's history plays a big part because they produced one of the greatest teams of all time which pioneered the game. If Forest won 5 European cups in a decade, they'd probably still be bigger than City, but when everything is combined they don't have enough to realistically claim to be bigger. The SPL is hardly comparable, it's produced nowhere near as many stars, the level of quality is a world apart, there's more competition, the best players leave for Europe rather than all moving to the same two top clubs, so to keep winning titles after losing your best players is more of an achievement if anything. |

That comment alone suggests to me you know nothing about Argentian football River Plate and Boca Juniors might be the most successful and well known names but if you think the clausura is like the SPL than you are sadly wrong my friend because its a highly competitive league with alot of great teams. If Boca or River Plate finished mid table I would not be at all surprised because it happens quite frequently and you know what these two haven't been the best teams in Argentina for several years now which underlines my point. If you honestly believe River Plate ISN'T one of the worlds finest clubs then something is very very wrong.............Ant has made some superb posts however Notts Forest have won the european cup twice not once

Lol river plate is one of the worlds finest yet it finishes midtable frequently... I don't know much about Argentinian football, or it's history so call me misinformed or ignorant but for me river aren't that big or good. I accept all criticism but I'm yet to see otherwise. |

I meant in recent years but thats only because River Plate has declined slightly over past few years......other than that River Plate has always fought near or at the top im just pointing out though that there are many great teams in Argentina Wiki River Plate is one of the most successful teams in Argentine football. They have won the Primera División a record 33 times; their last domestic title was the 2008 Clausura. In addition, they have won five international titles, including two Copa Libertadores, one Intercontinental Cup, one Supercopa Sudamericana, and one Copa Interamericana. Their success in the 1990s had led IFFHS to name them ninth in their All-Time Club World Ranking (and first in the Americas). Man Utd hadn't won the league in 26 years before 93 and you're telling me about what and who is and isn't a big club If River Plate played in England then I bet you they would have just as many if not more titles than United you can only imagine how powerful this club could be with fiances.

This isnt really a path I want to go down but what the heck... Is being successful in the past ensure you will forever be seen as a big club? And let's face it the standard of Argentinian football or south amerian football since the 1980s has been nowhere near the European elites. So I take their achievements with a pinch of salt when comparing them with the worlds best. It's an ideological difference tbf, they are a big name for a reason but nostalgia and "indie" syndrome makes people rate them higher than they should be. IMHO. |

Even today despite being on verge of relegation RP still have elite players who very soon will be plying their trade in Europe I just dont know what you are trying to say here exactly I am pretty baffled by it all. Big club= Fanbase Stadium/Facilites History/Tradition Quality of player Those are the key ingredients imo and guess what River Plate have all of them |

during the 70s and 80s man utd frequently finished mid table and were even relegated, yet we were still the biggest club in england, ac milan also have been in a similar situation, river are a massive club, you can't be successful all the time just ask liverpool and arsenal |
