The world champions Spain have been invited to play in the Copa America following the withdrawal of Japan, according to the Spanish football federation's president Angel María Villar.
"Yesterday we received the official invitation, and we don't rule it out," Villar said at an event in Barcelona.
"Next week or the week after we will determine at a meeting of the board of directors whether we will accept the invitation."

Japan withdrew from this summer's tournament in Argentina following the devastating earthquake and tsunami last month. The Japanese FA president Junji Ogura said the priority was "to continue saving lives and rebuilding the country".

Villar said the approach would be given serious consideration. Should they take part, Spain would replace Japan in Group A, with the hosts, Bolivia and Colombia.
"I don't rule anything out when the request is made with affection and love, but at the same time taking into account the difficulties," Villar said.
"That doesn't mean we are going or not, but as president I have the obligation to take it to the board."

They invite two teams, usually Mexico and another team. This time they've gone for Japan, for some weird reason, and Spain, due to the Latino connections.

Japan have been in it before Moe you knob end. Last Copa America was class, Robinho was immense. Backing Argentina to win it this time, they're at home plus the new manager is quality.

Yeah...ummm...the question was rather to do with the significance of Japan playing in the Copa America as opposed to whether they've participated before or not. So...knob end?

To add onto my post before, Japan's inclusion maybe due to the Japanese-Brazilian ties and is likely to be due to, as with Spain's inclusion, football politics (money, merchandise, tickets etc.)

Winner.

I dont care what disaster strikes Japan heck even the Japs were struck by an atomic bomb I would accept no excuses quite frankly I am disgusted the J league has been postponed but this really does take the biscuit. Most of the NT play in europe so why pull out of a competition that is set thousands of miles away  just for this I wont be supporting them in 2014 I will be jeering and shouting abuse at them  bastards

Not on mine.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.
