Interesting question to be honest, because while Barca have possibly the best team of all-time many journalists and elcules have castigated them for their apparent lack of depth.

Do you agree with this view? If so, which sides would you say have greater strength in depth? And even if you don't agree with the point above, which clubs in world football would you say have the best squad depth?

It's tough to answer because you may say that a team with mediocre starters and mediocre backup have better squad depth than a team with great starters and mediocre backup, due to less variance between the two groups. Are Barca's backup really worse than anybody elses, or is it just an illusion because of the ridiculous standard of the starters?

A series of penetrating questions from Trigglebeef, where will this debate go now?

United and Arsenal have great depth, as do Real Madrid; I underestimate ours quite a bit though, we have the likes of Thiago, Keita, Adriano, Bojan, Mascherano, Maxwell, Milito, Dos Santos etc who only look like lesser quality players because of the amazing stars around them.

This is why United always seem to "cope so well" with an injury crisis, because bar Vidic and VDS, they haven't got that many great players that they'll especially miss.

Winner.

Arsenal's depth is a bit shit I reckon. Over the last few couple of months whenever we lose RVP or Cesc we look fucking toothless. At the start of the season the fringe players roll prem over teams in the Carling Cup, but as soon as we get to the nitty gritty part they do shit when called upon.

I'm not sure about Arsenal. They've got loads of Rosicky-type players who can play CM or on the wing fairly well and not look out of their depth, but these players can't really make any form of consistent meaningful contributions. They've just about coped with losing Vermaelen at CB this year but only just.

City's is very good as well actually, though less so in terms of personnel at the back.

City by far, we could literally field a second XI good enough for at least PL top 6 finish.

------------------Given
Boyata--Boateng--Kolo--Zabaleta
----SWP--Vieira-Milner--Johnson
-------------Dzeko--Ade

Not to mention the likes of Bellers, Jo, RSC, Bridge, Onuoha etc. Unrivalled.

Where do you draw the line between too much strength in depth being good or bad though. Of course it's good to have class backup in the event of injuries and fatigue, but it also promotes more rotation and a less settled starting eleven which can have negative results.

Good point Triggle. Guardiola is on record saying he prefers a smaller squad.

A few weeks ago Fergie fielded the same side as the previous game for the first time in 150 odd games. I rest my case.

Special mention to Spurs, they've got quite a decent squad. Packed in the GK, midfield & forward departments.
