Yeah Trig if we play like that, an attacking midfielder isn't needed as much, if at all. But that means we're playing with two midfielders and it would be handy if one of them could get involved in attacks and create things. Before Hernandez we had two forwards who weren't out and out strikers, we were sacrificing some of their better qualities to have one of them as a goalscorer. Now that we have Hernandez, a player who is built for staying up top, hanging on the edge of the defensive line and is fast as fuck, we can give Rooney or Berbatov a more specified role in the side. Rooney will still roam around though, he drifts out wide a bit and switches the play, releasing Valencia. But if we had a CM who ventures forward a little more, he would provide another option and he could create in a more advanced role than Scholes does. I think if we had this sort of player we'd create a lot more chances. |

Rooney had might as well be the AM really, just with freedom to do what the fuck he wants. He ticks most the boxes, he'll press, track back, come deep to pick the ball up if needed, and do a decent job creating. |

Won the CL? As in the final, or the campaign? Because for the majority of the time Mourinho employed 4213 (Cambiasso alongside one of the two passers Stankovic & Motta). So it still followed the usual pattern...

calm downtrig we dont need an AM in the mould of kaka, who wouldnt work in our current system. we need a player who can keep things ticking over but wont be afraid to play a forward pass or take the game by the scruff of the neck. all we have are crabs and hammer throwers and for a side like united its unacceptable. |

Sounds like you want a deep lying playmaker to replace Scholes then, who can also carry out defensive duties. Somebody who does what Wilshere does for us currently, rather than someone who does what Cesc does for us? |

closer to a cesc would really compliment our current system, a system which i dont like that much tbh. we a so reliant on nani to create its pathetic. thank god valencia is back. |

Schweini would be perfect as the Scholes replacement, keeping the things ticking over and helping to control possession, while also offering a decent amount defensively. Hargreaves you should give up on though, he's done for. |

If the latter returns to a standard somewhat near what he achieved in '08, and on a consistent basis, I can't think of many other realistic & economical options. Edited by ZeeZoo, Mar 18 2011, 07:35 PM.

That would be more or less my approach too but I'd like to have a player who can create in advanced positions where Rooney is creating in your system, not all the time but for example if Rooney drifts out left, he will spread it out to Valencia or Nani at RW partly because there is nobody in central areas to really link with in the final third. We have Rooney who has good movement, Hernandez who has really good movement in behind defences so it would be nice to have a midfielder who can take advantage of that from a deeper role than Rooney or Berba would play. Right now we've nobody who can play on the floor passes in behind the defence, slide rule passes which Hernandez would lap up. Instead we get Rooney blasting it out to Valencia and him turning left, then right.... then left again and right again before finally putting the ball in the box. Meanwhile Rooney and/or Hernandez are trying to get rid of their markers again after they've picked them up after the initial run. Having a playmaker there could open up more possibilities with different passing angles with both Hernandez and Rooney ahead to supply. Rooney could still link up with this player through little give and gos behind the defence where he can still put balls into Hernandez or at the far post to Valencia. Right now, although we have Rooney creating there's still a lot more we can do in this area. Rooney's range of passing doesn't really include short, incisive passes, perfectly weighted in behind the defence, Berbatov is much better at that anyways but why should we rely on one of our main goalscoring threats to be creating for us. Get someone in who can do this all game and have Rooney where he can cause more immediate damage either on his own or in combination with Hernandez. |
