a creative cm, a real technical player is essential. we have fletcher and anderson to close opponents and win the ball. we have carrick who is competent at screening the back four we just lack a player to make things happen going forward.

i dont know who we could get but im sure there are players out there that can/could fit that role without breaking the bank.

Yep, I think Carrick defends space behind him well. He might not make as many tackles as say Fletcher or Scholes but he makes a hell of a lot more interceptions and covers the defence well, nearly always alert to danger. He's been caught out a few times and I think that's playing on his mind too much, it's not always directly his fault but of course he's the only one to blame these days.

He's a very passive player but with the right players alongside him he could play a pivotal role in how our midfield operates.

He doesn't demand the ball enough but that doesn't excuse the fact he should be receiving passes more often from others.

Beyond this season, we've got the destroyer (Anderson, Hargreaves?, Fletcher), and now confirmed the passer (Carrick) but not a creator. For sure United won't sign another midfielder (beyond this supposed CM signing) for another 3 years. Shame, could do with Bastian. *Presuming that United stick with the 433/451 variants.*

I'm praying we sign Modric, I'm not optimistic that Spurs will want to get rid of one of their prized possessions but if they signed a good midfielder I don't think they'd be a whole lot weaker to be honest.

Carrick is a superb defensive player, the number of interceptions he makes is unreal. He's also pretty useful in the air. It's Scholes who's the utter disgrace defensively. For all his mercurial passing ability and capacity for possession football, he offers shit all when we're not on the ball and the amount of times he's failed to track runs into the penalty area this season has been swept under the rug massively.

Officially we don't have a quality presser in there but with Rooney dropping back more often than not at the moment that should be fine. Should Fletcher find some form in the run-in then there's not much to worry about.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only midfielder I would want to come to United. Modric is so fucking overrated and there is zero need for him.

Where would that leave United in terms of a creator?

I completely agree with you, but Scheweinsteiger would only replace Carrick (who has incidentally signed a long-term contract), leaving us short in the creativity department.

Bastian would be the long term successor to Scholes in my eyes. We don't need a creator in the middle.

Name me one system/team where the absence of a creator in a 3 man midfield has worked.

DaG's right on this one. I posted something pretty epic on this whole "midfield philosophy" idea a while ago and to be honest it should be the orthodoxy on the entire debate. I'll try to find it for you in a sec. Besides, who said we'd be playing a 3-man midfield? And equally, when we played a 3 in the middle with regularity last season I wouldn't have called any of our midfielders "creators" as you mean it.

Here's the thread: http://liquid-football-forum.com/topic/7957860/1/#post8280699

Here's the post I made:

ZM is normally excellent but this is clutching at straws. Inter won the CL this year with two destroyers (Zanetti and Cambiasso) in the middle and one pure-bred traditional AM playing behind the striker. Barcelona employ three passers in the centre because Busquets, Iniesta and Xavi just happen to be the best three midfielders at the club. Barcelona and Spain are so successful because they have the best players, not in and of itself because they use passers rather than destroyers in the middle.

I don't think you can categorise midfield combinations so easily any more. Back when almost everyone played 442 models like destroyer-creator fitted pretty accurately, but now there's so much variation throughout the European scene that it's virtually impossible to claim that one style is dominant. Mourinho clearly proved this season that responding to the system employed by the opposition is the crucial conduit to success. In 2010 I wouldn't say there is any one particular style that trumps all.

I reckon SAF will stick with Hernandez the furthest man forward and Rooney in behind, so an AM won't even be played.
