Are you trying to suggest Jens is going to carry us defensively?

Because our midfield don't control things Sam. Fletcher gives it away for fun, Carrick hides all game long and Scholes is getting old. It exposes our defence and gives our front men less to work with. That's why I have a problem with our midfield. Tell me with a straight face our midfield is as good as Barca's, Madrid's, Chelsea's, Inter's, Spurs' even.
Yeah, I agree that our midfield probably isn't as good as the first four of those teams, but that doesn't mean it's not good enough to win the CL. I agree that we should probably strengthen that department over the summer - though I don't believe it's our #1 priority - but this team can win the Champions League, make no bones about it. At the end of the day, with this apparently shite midfield we're sitting pretty at the top of the PL, still in the three major competitions. And yeah its weaknesses might leave our defence exposed at times but when we have the right personnel fit and firing (ie Ferdinand and Vidic) we can cope with that.

Midfield is overrated anyway.

If midfield should not be our first priority in the summer what should it be?!

Lol good point. That's kind of a given though. Would you say mf is our next highest priority?

It has to be. Scholes hasn't looked very good for a while now so not only do we not have a midfielder who would get into Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City's sides, we hardly have one that'd make their bench if you ask me.

We need someone in there. What we have now just isn't good enough. We can't afford to just say oh well they're alright and we have good defenders so they can handle the pressure. Bottom line is they come under more pressure than they should. We need someone in there who can keep the ball, run the show as good as Scholes has done and a player who can help win possession back. The bunch we have now just don't do it well enough.

Pirlo, as a short term solution, is a decent shout.

I don't think he's gonna be much better than Scholes and we'll face the same situation next season when he can't cope with the pace of PL either.

He's 31, fitness wise he should be good for 2 years. Plus he's an intelligent player enough player to cope with the demands of a faster brand of football.

I'd take him no doubt but I would like to see us lay down some foundations in this midfield. At least 1 member you can honestly say will be a permanent fixture for 5 years to come. I'd like Modric but honestly if we were to try and sign him we'd be looking at a fee over £30m which is a little too much for him and that's the minimum we'd have to fork out to take him from Spurs.

Assuming Anderson comes on a little, enough to be played in a box-to-box role with a fair bit of defensive duty, we could play something like this in a 4-3-3.

Anderson_Carrick
_____Modric

or when attacking...

_____Carrick

Would Carrick and Modric be enough as a two-man midfield though. With the strikers we have it all points toward playing two up front so we'll have to have a tough and combative pair of midfielders. A real pitbull of a player would be nice to have in there, maybe Melo would be an option since Juve are in a spot of bother?

Also Carrick doesn't cut it, I want to see the back of him. I'd rather see Fletcher still in our line up next season than Carrick. He might lose it the whole time, but not in dangerous positions and he actually wants the ball and tackles people, Carrick does neither of those things.

Can't believe I'm defending him here but tackling isn't a necessity when it comes to Carrick's role.
