Forwards get involved in play deeper than Strikers

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.

A striker for me is the spearhead of a front three or the main goalscorer, most forward of a two man frontline, assuming the other is more of a #10. Usually has a fairly rigid role in the side such as Torres or Dzeko, but Messi is a bit different. I wouldn't really class him as a striker, a forward playing the striker's role at best, if that makes any sense!

Bergkamp dropped deeper and he was without a doubt a striker. Van Persie drops deeper and he is without a doubt a striker.

I wouldn't be arsed to go into depth about it, but that's the general gist of it.

I wouldn't call Bergkamp a pure striker. He's a proper #10, drops deep, creates a lot, scores goals too but not to the level of the main striker i.e. Henry. Granted he was more prolific in his earlier days and probably played a more advanced role and occupied those spaces more often but it's natural for a player of his type to drop deeper as their careers go by.

van Persie would be more of a striker yeah. Like Paddy says that's the gist of it but I suppose in today's game the term can be more loosely applied. We've got more movement between forward players, like Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo at United. Whether that sort of redefines the role of striker I don't know. But there's also nothing to say you can't have team without a striker.

There are very few strikers/fowards that don't drop deep at some point. Drogba comes deep a lot. Torres hasn't got many rivals for the position then.

That's what I mean, the game is changing. The difference between a striker and centre-forward is minimal these days. Before one was a #9 and the other a #10, respectively. These days there's so much movement between the forward players that it can be a bit hard to definitevely call a particular goalscorer one or the other.

I think strikers and also wingers who are more attacking are just called forwards and centre-forwards. Those who still have very particular and rigid role in the side will be called striker and wingers. That's the best I can explain it I think.

We'll then saying he is the worlds best striker means nothing when there are hardly any of them. People who say he isn't the best striker will include the likes of Messi.

He's the best striker in the world, Liverpool player or not, and any Liverpool fan that says different is a fickle bitch.

No they've just heard of Lionel Messi.
never mind...shit joke from me...

Messi does both roles, he leads the line when needed and also drops deep to create. RvP plays a similar role for us.

At Ajax he was. He said that when he first came to Arsenal he was surprised than whenever he dropped off the CBs would never go to him and CMs didn't pay much attention either and he started using those areas more and more.
