They're on track to finish 7th again this season, they have new owners, a better squad than last season, they're in the FA Cup Semi Finals, and they've won the CC. Looks like progress to me, but it's not like they could have got any worse.

I'm very interested to see who they sell/sign in the summer. Hopefully it's more of the same, good foreign players out, average British players in.

"ON TRACK TO FINISH 7TH AGAIN" IS PROGRESS AFTER SPENDING OVER 100M IS IT?? I don't give a shit about off the field antics, they have not progressed as a team. A CC win counts for nothing in reality when your opponents constantly field weakened sides. They're 8 points behind Newcastle ffs, NEWCASTLE, THAT TEAM YOU GUARANTEED WOULD FINISH BOTTOM HALF.

No shit, but it doesn't mean they've progressed. They've been just as bad this season as they were last. Cup runs are unpredictable and misleading, but league positions rarely lie.

If we got both domestic cups then I will obviously be happy with the cups but the main priority is the league and he has made a mess of that. There has been a few tweets today from a guy pretty well clued up and he has said the owners gave kenny only 5m to spend in jan. He didnt touch that and the plan was to spend massive again this summer. I cant see how they would trust him again with that cash. I really dont

We have already sounded out Mvila ,thats the type of signing we ned to be going after now.

I would much rather a new manager come in to spend the money though

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is still confident of long-term success at Anfield but rues social media for encouraging a demand for instant success from supporters.

The Reds were booed off the pitch last week following a 2-1 home defeat to bottom club Wigan, their fifth league defeat in six games and 10th loss at Anfield this season.

Despite lifting the Carling Cup last month and progressing through to the FA Cup semi-finals Dalglish has been under pressure thanks to the Merseysiders' plummeting league form.

The Scot accepts he and his players will face criticism for recent performances but believes much of it stems from impatience, with the supporters' desire for instant success encouraged by social networking sites such as Twitter.

""There is no success in football which is instant - you can forget instant." "
Kenny Dalglish Quotes of the week

"It is a modern idiom; you have social media which is instant and when you ask a question you get an instant reply," said the Scot.

"Everything is instant now - even coffee. There is no way it is anything other than that.

"But what has not changed at this club is the desire of the players to take the club forward and that is what we are trying to do.

Twitter

"I don't think it will be done overnight, it won't be done on Twitter, it will be done with a lot of hard work and that is what we are trying to do.

"There is no success in football which is instant - you can forget instant."

Dalglish also reiterated his view that the club's success should not just be measured by matters on the pitch, despite being criticised for previously suggesting a new kit deal with Warrior Sports is a sign of success.

He still believes all areas of the club are making great strides - something that is not always noticed or appreciated by the fans and the press.

"It depends how people view success. I view success as the club moving forward, and that's what we're doing. We've moved forward in lots of ways," added the former Newcastle and Blackburn boss.

"Maybe at times it isn't always apparent, but on the pitch the club is moving forward, in and around Melwood it's moved forward, off the pitch it's moved forward, the academy has moved forward.

"We certainly have made progress over the year, in lots of areas - not just the first team."

Kenny: My players will challenge for the title...next season

Kenny Dalglish is ready to put his reputation and job on the line by backing his under-fire Liverpool players to deliver next season.

Dalglish insists he and his team are hurting even more than the Anfield fans after five defeats in six Premier League matches.

But the Scot, who has led Liverpool to Carling Cup success and an FA Cup semi-final this season, insists he has so much faith in his current squad that it will be difficult to find anyone who can improve it in the summer transfer market.

“The pessimism is all about results in the league and we want to do better in the league,” said Dalglish.

“We have to accept the criticism that’s going to come our way if we aren’t winning league matches.

“But if it’s hurting anybody, it’s not hurting them as much as it is hurting the players and staff in here.

“The most important thing for us is to improve on this season and the players expect that as well. If someone comes in, they have to be a lot better than what we’ve got and that is a huge challenge.

“I don’t think there are many people more committed than the players we have here. If we don’t find someone better than what we’ve got, we don’t get them. Simple and straightforward as that.”

Dalglish suggested it is a tough task for any club other than Manchester City to find better players, but that will be scant consolation to Liverpool fans if they do not compete in the league next season.

Today they face a Toon side growing in power and stature – and eight points ahead of them in the table. Most of Dalglish’s signings have yet to prove their worth but the defiant boss said: “Everything’s there for this group of players to be winning matches.

“They need direction and we’re the ones that need to be giving them direction. But we cannot change our principles because that’s the way we’ve been brought up.

“We might tweak a few things but if you swapped the cup results to league games, we’d be flying – maybe that would be more satisfactory to everybody else.

“We’ve put the first and second clubs in the League out of the domestic cups. We went on and won one and we’re in the semi of the other. The cups have been good to us.

“But we need to get results in the league to take the pressure off. The players are determined to correct it and we want to see the club progress – and I think it has progressed. I am not saying it couldn’t be more successful, but I do think it has progressed.”

Winner.
