"That was [Jamie Carragher's] third game, Steven Gerrard's third game, there were a few of them had their third game in seven days and that is a long run, especially when you have travel in between. Maybe that is the price you have to pay for success"

WINNING THE CARLING CUP WAS A BIG SUCCESS FOR LIVERPOOL LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

ALAN SHEARER
Kenny is not a man who’s lost touch with football

THE ALARM bells are ringing at Anfield after the collapse at Loftus Road was followed by defeat at home to Wigan this weekend.

A glance at the league table and Liverpool are as far away from Champions League football now as they were when Kenny Dalglish returned.

A top-four finish had to be the target this season after a £113million outlay on the team.

But 13 points now divides Liverpool from Tottenham who hold that final Champions League place at the moment.

A tilt at the title can only be but a distant dream — long into the distance at that.

My Match of the Day colleague Lee Dixon informed us on Saturday that just five home wins from 15 is their worst tally since 1953.

Quite how he knew that is anyone's guess, clever guy Lee.

You look at the buys and you have to say both Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing have flopped.

I, for one, didn't think they would.

Carroll can't have lost the ability overnight that made him such a good player at Newcastle.

It did seem an awful lot of money but as I know, the player himself cannot control that, although he does have to cope with the extra burden that brings.

It is a burden that at times looks to have weighed Carroll down, although if someone like Downing had actually been able to find him with a few crosses I'm sure things could have been different.

Jordan Henderson hasn't done it, Charlie Adam is in and out.

But both Luis Suarez and Jose Enrique have proved to be good buys.

Suarez might need too many chances to get his goal but his all-round play has undoubtedly been one of the few pluses.

Yet do you know that in terms of silverware this could yet be Liverpool's best season in 11 years.

If they add the FA Cup to the Carling Cup, which is a very real possibility, there will be envious glances from everyone bar the Premier League champions themselves.

That is why, right now, any criticism of Dalglish should be tempered. There is no doubt the league campaign has simply not been good enough — but the cups could provide salvation.

They desperately need the FA Cup to ensure that. If not what do you do, get rid of Dalglish?

The criticism some would have is that he has been out the game too long and lost touch.

I have worked under him at both Blackburn and Newcastle and, believe me, this is a man who would not lose touch with the game if he was on the moon.

He studies it whether in it or out, if there is a park game going on around the corner he would watch.

This is not a man who has lost touch with football.

And I doubt either he has lost the techniques that made little Blackburn take on the big boys and win the 1995 title.

He was a master at Blackburn, invoking a togetherness and desire to achieve unlike any I have known.

I don't believe he has lost that ability.

Just 13 months is no time to make a club like Liverpool great again. And yet a cup double this season and he will have taken some big steps on the road to achieving that.

A long-term plan, after all, and success in whatever form it comes breeds confidence.

Liverpool fans and the owner should keep faith.

The right man is still at the helm, he just needs more time.

Reporter; "Kenny, what hopes have you got for Raheem Sterling?"

Kenny; "My hope is you'll have a bit of common sense."

I think I hate him more than anybody in football. I take so so much pleasure in them being so shit. Every interview he gives he just comes across as an arsehole.

Liverpool are just a midtable club. The only time I've truly cared about their progress is 08/09. One season in my lifetime they've actually been of relevance to me really, they're such a nothing club in the modern era but it's always nice to see them do shit, even if the novelty wore off years ago.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
