Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed Thomas Vermaelen has suffered another injury setback.

Wenger has confirmed long-term absentee Vermaelen is to see a specialist after damaging his troublesome Achilles in training on Monday.

The Gunners boss was hopeful of naming Vermaelen in his matchday squad for Wednesday's game with Wolves after claiming on Friday the Belgium centre-back was only "days" from returning after a two-month lay-off.

But it now looks like Vermaelen is set for another spell on the sidelines, adding to Arsenal's defensive woes after it was confirmed on Tuesday Laurent Koscielny will serve a two-match suspension for his red card in the defeat to Newcastle.
Pain

Wenger said: "I don't know where we go with Thomas time-wise but, at the moment, he cannot play.

"On the scan, his Achilles is completely clear but as soon as he stays out for a while, it tightens up and he has pain. We don't know the source of his pain."

Wenger also revealed midfielder Abou Diaby faces a test on his injured ankle later this week. "He has a test Wednesday or Thursday," he added.

"If he gets through that, it will be very quick; if he still has pain, he will have to see a specialist."

Wenger has good news on the health of Samir Nasri and reckons the in-form midfielder will shake off a calf complaint in time for the Gunners' trip to Molineux.
