Both Real Madrid and Manchester United made a move for Olympique de Marseille’s Stephane Mbia this summer, the Cameroonian has said in an interview with L’Equipe.

There were strong reports linking the former Stade Rennais man with a move away from the Stade Velodrome, partly because he wanted to play in the heart of defence while coach Didier Deschamps wanted to use him in the midfield — as he did on Tuesday when OM met Zilina in the Champions League.

Mbia has denied that he was at the heart of these suggestions, instead indicating that he was approached by two of Europe’s greatest names.

“I have never expressed the wish to leave OM,” the African stated.

“Afterwards, clubs have approached me. The coach insisted that I stay. The fact is that I have not left for a big club like Real Madrid or Manchester [United], who approached me.”

Moreover, Mbia has confessed that Deschamps is like a father figure to him.

“He’s a good guru,” the 24-year-old laughed. “I'm working even when I'm not good in my head. He sees my investment. He made me realise that mastering two positions, defence and midfield, would be a plus in my career.

"The coach has worked with my mind. He is like my second dad here.”

The Yaounde-born player was signed by Marseille for €12 million (£10.6m) from Rennes in the summer of 2009 and played a significant role in their Ligue 1 title success last term but has struggled for pitch time this season due to injury

He's a pretty decent player. Very strong, mobile, can read the game well. I don't think he's good enough on the ball to play for a big club at CM, then again Alex Song is first choice here. Mbia is at about that level technically and passing wise.

Mbia claims he's on the verge of a move to QPR.

I'd love it if QPR got relegated after all of these signings.
