Tottenham have confirmed that an agreement is in place to bring Holland international Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid to White Hart Lane.

Spurs only emerged as contenders to sign the midfielder a few hours before Tuesday's transfer deadline and it was initially unclear whether they had been able to conclude a deal in time.

It was understood that Tottenham had missed the cut-off point to finalise the paperwork and requested special dispensation from the Premier League to sign Van der Vaart.

A statement has now been released on the club's official website to clear up the confusion and announce that the move has been approved.

And the Premier League said in a statement: "The Premier League can confirm the transfer of Rafael van der Vaart's registration from Real Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur."

Van der Vaart, who has scored 16 goals in 83 appearances for Holland, is thought to have joined for a fee of around £8million.
No Bayern bid

Madrid earlier denied Harry Redknapp's assertion that the player was subject of an £18million bid from Bayern Munich, whilst confirming they had met the deadline for Van der Vaart's sale.

Sporting director Miguel Pardeza told his club's official website: "Real Madrid met all the deadlines regarding the transfer of Van der Vaart.

"It's now up to the Premier League to accept the signing so that we can make it official.

"It is absolutely false that Real Madrid received a 21million euro offer from Bayern Munich for Van der Vaart.

"In fact, the German team never showed an interest to sign the player, so the allegations made in England have greatly surprised us."

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Rafael Van der Vaart.

The Holland international came through the ranks at Ajax and won two league titles during 141 appearances with the Eredivisie side, scoring 60 goals before leaving for Hamburg in the summer of 2005.

The attacking midfielder, 27, was the Bundesliga side's leading scorer in his first season in Germany and went on to captain the side before joining Real Madrid ahead of the 2007/08 campaign.

Rafael has been capped by Holland a total of 83 times, scoring 16 goals, since making his international debut against Andorra in 2001 at the age of 18.

He has since represented the Netherlands at two European Championships and two World Cups, including this summer's tournament in South Africa where he featured five times in the side's run to the Final.

“I could never play for another club in Spain and the truth is that if you are leaving Real Madrid, there is only one club you can join that is not a step down – and that’s Manchester United," Van der Vaart said.

Terrible signing it really is. He's not a top quality player and there's nowhere he can play in the Spurs side. Add to this he doesn't even want to be at Spurs and he sees the club as a step down, you could have a howler of a signing on your hands.

However, It is great to see Spurs signing a player for 8m that United fans have been desperate to see at their club for a long time. Fergie is out there spending the same amounts on homeless kids whilst Spurs are signing established players. Kamikaze spending from Fergie, United really are a small time club these days.

You were desperate to sign VDV, instead you got a Division 3 Portuguese striker to add to your other 7 youth strikers. United still lacking in the creativity department, and the little cash you have left that doesn't go towards paying off the interest on your 850m debt goes on shit young players who won't even be near the side for 3 years. Small club mentality.

Lol who the fuck wanted Rafa at United? The fact that he placed us on a par with Real might also indicate that we're not a "small time club these days". If we didn't table a bid for Ozil then why the fuck would we have done so for Van der Vaart...?
