Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has revealed that he would consider playing for England if he received a call-up from manager Fabio Capello. The Spanish playmaker was born in San Sebastian, but has never played for Spain's senior squad, having only made 12 appearances for the Under-21s and his native country's youth sides. The prospect of Arteta playing for England has often been mooted, but could become a reality this year as he qualifies as a British resident.

"Of course I would consider it," he replied when asked about the prospect of playing for Capello's men.

"I knew a few people have been talking about it, but I don't want to say anything yet as I don't want to talk about something that isn't there at the moment.

"If one day that opportunity comes then I will have to consider it."

:wank:

1. Would Arteta be useful for England? Where and how do you see him slotting in?
2. Is it realistic to suggest that Capello would actually give him a call-up?
3. Do you have any qualms about a Spaniard playing for your national team?

I'm Irish but,

1. Would Arteta be useful for England? Where and how do you see him slotting in?
He would offer a disciplined CM unlike Gerrard and Lampard who tend to stroll around so he would replace one of those.
2. Is it realistic to suggest that Capello would actually give him a call-up?
Its a great oppurtunity for Arteta but i cant see Cabello calling him up because of the fact he isnt a Pure Englishman but either is he so you never know.
3. Do you have any qualms about a Spaniard playing for your national team?
Not my National team but I'd be happy to have him in the Irish or N.Irish squad.

He would definitely be useful for England, and is much better at playing a disciplined CM role than Gerrard & Lampard.

2. Is it realistic to suggest that Capello would actually give him a call-up?

I'm not sure, I would like to think so, since Capello is foreign himself, but will the FA want it?

3. Do you have any qualms about a Spaniard playing for your national team?

Nope, its better for the team, it's not like we will get anywhere with the English players.

I will be livid if the FA don't allow this to happen. Loads of other NTs do exactly the same (Liedson, Boeteng, Deco). It is slightly defeating the point of international football but if other teams are doing it then I don't really care.

Hiring a foreign coach is basically the same thing, although perhaps slightly less obvious, and we've already done that twice so who cares.

Not required whatsoever.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.

Because he has the culture and the brain to bring some patience to our central midfield and keep possession of the ball for sustained periods, rather than just going hollywood all the fucking time and giving the ball straight back to the opposition 9 times out of 10. If Scholes won't come back then Arteta would be the next best thing for us with what we currently have available.

Winner.

Yeah I'd agree with that Trig. I would particularly like Scholes to explain himself.
