Although Higuain declined the switch Arsenal, he believes Wenger has acquired one of the world's best players in Mesut Ozil. "With Ozil, the Gunners have become even stronger," he added. "I believe that this deal represents the hit of the market: paying €45million, Arsenal has really made a big bargain. "Mesut is one of the best forwards in the world. I played with him and it was great. When I see all the transfers of the summer market, I am increasingly convinced that Arsenal did the best one getting him. "He's one of the best strikers in the world. Maybe even the best in the game?" |

Why do people keep saying Ozil is Arsenals new Bergkamp? The comparison annoys me somewhat |

If he stays at Arsenal long enough and we win things he'll surpass Bergkamp. |

Because Bergkamp was a massive signing, a superstar in football because of his time with Ajax (who were massive back then) and the Dutch team. Since then Ozil is the first superstar we have signed, and his signing has seemingly lifted the whole club on and off the field, just as Bergkamp did. Similar types of players too. |

Both players excel at giving the final pass, that's what they're known for. Bergkamp was more a striker type and Ozil more a midfielder (though he's closer to being a forward IMO) but there are many similarities. |

Mesut Ozil's genius will win Arsenal the Premier League title according to Sami Khedira Mesut Ozil has been hailed as the “genius” who will win Arsenal the Premier League title. Sami Khedira plays for Germany with Ozil and used to be a Real Madrid team-mate of the 24-year-old until his record move to Arsenal. Ozil has been a revelation at the Emirates, helping the Gunners to 10 straight victories ahead of today’s trip to West Brom. “Arsenal had a strong team anyway, but Mesut makes them the best team in England,” said Khedira. “I am sure he can be the player that makes things happen for them and win them the championship. “Mesut is a genius on the field, there is no other way to describe him. “Of course, there was some disappointment among the players at Madrid because he is the best in his position in the world. But I understand his decision as a player and also as my friend. “He is already playing amazing football for Arsenal and he hasn’t even got used to the Premier League yet.” Ozil is the latest German member of the Arsenal dressing-room and Khedira, 26, believes their winning mentality will be vital to Arsene Wenger’s team. “There is a real German influence now, with Per Metersacker, Lukas Podolski, Mesut and also younger players coming through,” said Khedira. “They are the sort of players Arsenal need if they are to win trophies.” Khedira will have 18 months remaining on his contract in the January window and the opportunity to reunite Ozil with his old colleague has not been lost on the Arsenal hierarchy You know where to find us Sami |

![]() The Premier League has seen plenty of stars making a rapid impact over the years. But it’s hard to recall anyone transforming the whole mood of a club with just five games --some of which weren’t even that special, if we’re totally honest. And yet, Mesut Özil has done in virtually no time what none of the dozen or so new high-profile signings in the English top-flight could do (thus far): the 24-year-old has dramatically improved the whole team and turned into a symbol of hope in the process. His effect on the club’s fortunes has been two-fold. Firstly, signing him for £42m from Real Madrid helped Arsène Wenger quell murmurs of discontent that had become louder and louder over the course of an embarrassingly high number of failed transfer window dealings. What’s more, Özil’s arrival has put Arsenal back on the international map as far as superstars are concerned. Last season, there wasn’t a single player on the squad with genuine global appeal after the departure of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. The greatest impact has been on the pitch, however. While his goal against Napoli was sublimely taken and the number of assists will reach two figures before too long, Özil has altered Arsenal’s game in a more profound but less visible way. Even at their very best, Wenger’s Arsenal have always been a confidence side -- sensational when the mood took them, a little fragile (by comparison with results machines like Ferguson’s United and Mourinho’s Chelsea 1.0) when it didn’t. There’s a reason why Wenger hasn’t stopped talking about “mental strength” and “character” over the last 17 years: self-belief is a vital component of playing good, fast combination football. Players who are low on morale are more likely to opt for the save pass and to not attack the space with the ball. And you need very good players, too. Özil, by virtue of always finding time and space to control the ball and play it back, brings a sense of rhythm and calmness to the team. He’s also very good at making diagonal runs to escape the attention of holding midfielders. His movement opens up spaces for intelligent teammates like Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta. Of course, he couldn’t have done it alone. Arsenal’s great run of ten wins in row preceded the German international’s arrival. You have to point to a defense that has become a lot more settled in the absence of Thomas Vermaelen, whose frequent attempts at high-line interception made keeping an organized line impossible. Per Mertesacker has grown into a hugely important player. He’s entrusted by Wenger -- who is quite hands-off when it comes to tactical details -- to organize the back four. The addition of Mathieu Flamini has also worked wonders. The 29-year-old Frenchman might not be the kind of midfielder the supporters were hoping for, but the very fact that there’s once again a defensive specialist in the key position on the pitch has helped tremendously. Ramsey’s continued development has been nothing short of phenomenal -- I freely admit that I didn’t think he had it in him -- and Olivier Giroud has settled down to find mire composure on the ball and a better finish in front of goal. Its is Özil, though, who brings that extra bit of class that multiplies the skills of players and doesn’t just add another few percentage points. Three years at Real Madrid have made him physically and mentally tough enough to find his feet immediately in England. The psychology of the move should also not be underestimated. He’s the kind of player who blossoms when he’s the undisputed star on the pitch and the apple of his coach’s eye, rather than No. 3 or No. 4 in the pecking order. It’s hard to believe he would have made similarly big waves at Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United. The vacuum at Arsenal -- in the sense of quality and big player personalities -- has been a big part of his success. It’s fair to say that Özil didn’t contemplate a move to the Emirates in the beginning of the summer, and Arsenal pursued half a dozen players in various positions before they concluded a last-minute deal for his services. Both sides might not have exactly got what they wanted in the transfer window. But they got what they needed. |
