David James lined up to become Portsmouth player-manager after Avram Grant's departure

Portsmouth are hoping to pull off a shock by tempting David James to become their next manager.

The south coast club lost Avram Grant on Thursday night when he resigned from his position.

But the club's administrator Andrew Andronikou wants to appoint James in a player-coach role.

The England goalkeeper, 39, has no plans to retire yet but could be lured by the offer to combine the jobs.

He said: 'I would certainly not rule David James out of the reckoning. He obviously wants to go into management.

'Whether or not it is too early for him I don’t know but he is one of the most articulate guys I know. I am sure he will do a good job and I will be speaking to him about it.'

I wonder what the odds are for Pompey to suffer a few back to back relegation's :deepthought: .

You never know it could work out. Pompey will most likely spend a couple of seasons in the championship because with there debts I cant see how they will operate a funcional promotional surge.

FA Cup final is the same day as the Copa Del Rey final. I hope I don't have to miss Arsenal.

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.

Yeah spot on. He's commanding and intelligent (the odd rush of blood aside!) so when he gets experience i do think he'd make a decent manager.

I never thought David James would stay in football when he retires, he has admitted himself he isnt exactly a fanatic and its just a job to hi, and he has over interests outside football that i thought he would focus more upon retiring
