Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been ruled out for the rest of the season as he requires knee surgery. Torres missed Liverpool's draw with Fulham last weekend as a result of the problem and he will now be forced under the knife to correct the injury. The Spanish international underwent knee surgery in January and he spent six weeks on the sidelines. Liverpool have now confirmed that Torres will undergo surgery on a knee injury later on Sunday in Spain. A club spokesman said: "Fernando saw a specialist in Spain earlier today and it was decided that he would need surgery on a torn cartilage in his right knee. "This will be carried out later tonight. We cannot comment ahead of the operation, but as a guide, the usual rehabilitation period for this type of procedure is around six weeks." Despite enduring an injury-hit campaign, Torres has weighed in with 18 goals in 24 league outings for the Merseyside club this season. The news is a massive blow for Liverpool's chances of claiming a a top-four finish and also winning the Europa League with the first-leg of their semi-final clash against Torres' former club Atletico Madrid taking place on Thursday. |

Yes this is sad to see, Cesc will be delighted as this guarantees his starting place with Villa upfront on his own, but Spain would be so deadly with Torres on top form. Sad for the WC. |

Sad to hear.Hope Liverpool can still end the season on a high and beat Chelsea.Spain's options are hit as he will only have just under 2 weeks before the WC starts to get some fitness. With Cesc recovering from injury and Iniesta having some problems,Spain's opponents will take heart.Hope he makes a speedy recovery. |

Not a huge blow for Spain if he doesn't play tbh, I prefer seeing them with Villa up top on his own anyway. |
![]() Classic Kevin Keegan quotes Gary always weighed up his options especially when he had no choice. What disappointed me was that we played with no passion. I’m not disappointed. I’m just disappointed. My father was a miner and he worked down a mine | |
