Manchester City's Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor has confirmed his immediate retirement from international football.

The former Arsenal hit-man, who has 13 Premier League goals from 21 starts this season, was part of their ill-fated African Cup of Nations squad earlier this year.

Togo had been preparing for the tournament in Angola when gunmen opened fire on the team bus, killing their assistant coach, press officer and driver.

Adebayor has confirmed the tragic events played a massive part in his decision and that after giving himself time to mull over the tough call, he does not wish to repeat the experience.

The 26-year-old striker, who scored 16 times in 38 appearances for his country, describes captaining Togo as the 'ultimate honour'.

Difficult decision
"Following the tragic events during January's African Cup of Nations, in which two of my fellow countrymen were killed by terrorists in Angola, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football," he told City's official website.

"I have weighed up my feelings in the weeks and months since the attack, and I am still haunted by the events which I witnessed on that horrible afternoon on the Togo team bus.

"We were just footballers going to play a football match and represent out country, yet we were attacked by people who wanted to kill us all. It is a moment I will never forget and one I never want to experience again.

"For nine years I have played for the Togo team and, despite the events in Angola, I have some very good memories of my international career. I feel very proud to have been trusted with the position of captain of the Togolese football team. Leading your country in international competition is the ultimate honour for any player.

"Togo have some very talented players, and I dearly hope the players who remain will be able to put their memories of Angola behind them and go onto be a success for the nation. I have enormous belief in each and every one of them, players, coaches, staff and their families.

"The people who were on that coach together will forever be joined by a special bond - we are all brothers. I will always have the team and the people of Togo close to my heart and wish them every success in the challenges that they will face in the future."

Well they can feel free to retire too. I don't see how not wanting to risk your life by playing football is selfish, he has a wife and kids, a good life, why should he put that on the line just to play football for Togo, a nation who will no longer be playing in the ACN anyway. Ridiculous comment.

Adebayor short changing his Country's fans for a 2nd time, I am sure he went in to international retirement when he was at Arsenal and then came out of it. Lol

FA Cup final is the same day as the Copa Del Rey final. I hope I don't have to miss Arsenal.

Fair play to him. That experience must have been so harrowing and i wouldn't want to go play in Africa for my country ever again either. I'd play games outside of Africa but he can't really make that decision. It's all or nothing, and nothing is the best option.

Adebayor felt more sorry for himself than he did the poor bus driver who was killed. I wish he had gotten shot and killed the stupid idiot. I hate him. I would shoot him myself if I could get away with it. :GUN:

how he can say its an honour to captain the country, support the remaining players and still claim alegence to the togo team while running for the hills is a little hypocritical

yes on a personal level it makes sense but i dont see anyone else comming out and saying i wont play because im traumatised. i personally feel that he is using his status as the only star in that piss poor team to get some sympathy.

Anyone having a go at Ade because of this has no fucking heart and thinks they are tough. FFS this lad was nearly shot to death. He has every right to retire from International football, its not like anyone gives a rats about fucking Togo.
