442 has just published its list of the top 10 players to emerge from France '98, and seeing as that tourny and indeed the one in '02 are both quite cloudy in my memory it'd be wicked if some of you older/"more advanced than I was at a young age" football fans compiled your own lists. Here's 442's for '98, in order: 10 - Zinedine Zidane 9 - Dunga 8 - Edgar Davids 7 - Juan Sebastian Veron 6 - Christian Vieri 5 - Dennis Bergkamp 4 - Marcel Desailly 3 - Davor Suker 2 - Ronaldo 1 - Lilian Thuram |

Lol, wtf? So is the list for France '98 or for Korea '02? And is it the "top players to emerge from the tournament (i.e. in terms of talent)" or the top players at the tournament? |

What a mis-leading title. Anyway, did Vieri even do anything in France? Apart from scoring against some shitty sides inc. Cameroon, and Norway. |

It's not really misleading mate, just make two lists; one for '98 and '02. And yeah, no idea about Vieri. The most interesting piece of positioning is Zidane at 10. Here was the justification: "His two goals in the final, both headed from corners, have led to the impression that this was Zidane's tournament, but although he was good, he was far better at Euro 2000. His corner set up Dugarry in France's first game against South Africa, and he then spun brilliantly out of a challenge and flicked a pass out for Lizarazu to sey up Henry's opener vs Saudi Arabia. A red card for a stamp rather soured that match though, and he was subdued in both QF and SF rounds before bursting back to life vs Brazil." |

Dunga was much more pivotal at WC 94 IMO. In 98 the trio of Cesaer Sampaio, Leonardo and Dunga all done well and if anyone Cesaer Samaio was the standout player. He contributed very well in attack, even got himself a couple of goals against Nigeria I think in the second round. The rest of the list is pretty good though, good to see they didn't just put Zidane in 1st because he scored two in the final. He was good in that World Cup obviously but he got sent off for a discgraceful tackle against South Africa or Saudi Arabia and missed a game or two. |
