Sir Alex Ferguson refused to be drawn on whether Manchester United will move to sign David Villa this summer but did not reject the speculation outright. The Red Devils manager already has an eye on next season with the signing of young Mexican striker Javier Hernandez confirmed on Thursday. The Premier League champions will also welcome Fulham defender Chris Smalling into the squad in July after a deal was agreed in January. But most United fans will want to see a marquee signing arrive at Old Trafford in the summer with Villa, Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema just some of the names branded around. "It is about getting the player we need who are going to improve us or maintain the level we are at," Ferguson said. "That is the way we have operated in the past and there is not a lot wrong with that policy. "There is conjecture about every player. Last summer it was Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema, although he was a young player and one of the targets we set out to get. "Now it is David Villa. "I am sure by the end of the season there will be half a dozen more. I can't confirm that speculation but most of it is not right." I wouldn't be able to speak if this happened. It would be absolutely incredible. I think this shows he is being looked at but unfortunately i don't think he'd come. He's more likely to go to Madrid or something should he actually be sold. |

However ridiculous this speculation is what this article does reveal is that Fergie won't be entirely happy if we don't sign someone over the summer: "It is about getting the player we need who are going to improve us or maintain the level we are at," Ferguson said." That is fantastic news. |

£40 million for a 28-year old, and not ignoring the fact that there will be an almighty price war with Madrid?!? Unless Fergie plans to sell Berbatov this summer, and recuperating at least £10 million, Villa won't be heading to Old Trafford. With Macheda, Diouf, Welbeck (regardless of how poor his development has been) and now Hernandez at Old Trafford, I see it really difficult for Villa to fit in without stifling the development of potential world class strikers.

Goodness gracious me this would be utterly utterly stunning. Thoughts though on the implications for Rooney, would he move back into a more traditional no.10 role with Villa scoring the majority of the goals? ARGH IMAGINE IF THIS HAPPENED! We could sell Berba and Carrick, that should get us £20mil at least, leaving us only having to foot a £20mil bill on top of that. Villa might be 28 but that's 2-4 world class seasons guaranteed from him, maybe more. I know very little about him, how is his game likely to suffer from advancing years, he's not too reliant on pace is he? |

Yeah Diouf can stay And if it meant Rooney dropping back to SS then so be it. He can still do a very good job there and if he has a top class striker like Villa to link up with then he would still get his fair share of goals. The two of them could play up top together i reckon. You cannot pass up an opportunity to sign Villa. |

Villa will go for far more than £40m, Ibra went for nearly twice that AND he'll be amazing at the World Cup, putting his price up further. If I was Villa I'd rather stay at Valencia than go to Old Trafford, this side has so much potential if they hang onto their assets, and only one of them is on the up. That said, a Villa - Rooney strike force would be rather irresistable provided Villa takes to the Prem. |

There is very, very little chance of United signing a big name striker in the summer. |

Yeppo, going forward they are incredible and all those players will be around for ages: Banega is 21, Silva 24, Pablo 24, Mata 21; as a supporting cast for Villa they can only get better as they gel together as players, new stadium will be built soon, CL football next season and a restructuring of their loan will mean they become a buying club again rather than a selling one. I really want to see a dynasty there. |
