This comes after the news that Hernandez was signed for a fee in the region of £6m-£8m. In 2010 we've spent a total of £15m on two relatively unknown youngsters. I don't understand this tactic; it's clear that what's needed are a couple of excellent players who actually make a meaningful contribution to next season's campaign. We seem to be frittering money away a-la Benitez in the hope that one might eventually come good. I expect the names of J. Cole and Jack Rodwell to be added to this list over the summer, and while these latter two would certainly be very pleasing signings I certainly hope that Fergie's penchant for marquee signings hasn't ended. Thoughts on: this policy vs a marquee-based focus; and who else you expect United to sign over the summer... |

The signing of Smalling for a reported 12m is also an indication that Fergie is looking at a more youthful transfer policy. |

Quite simply the money isn't available to splash 30-40m on a world class playmaker or striker. |

Just don't agree with that. Firstly, Gill claims we have £140m in the bank directly accessible whenever Fergie wants to make a signing. This I can see people doubting, but the fact that we've already spent close to £20m (if what Crimsons is saying is true) on two separate players, before the summer window I might add, suggests that we could've brought in a world class player. One world class player wouldn't be enough though, you need a few players. Especially with the aging Scholes, VDS, Giggs and Neville in your team. |

I heard that Arsenal had made an increased offer for Smalling and that forced United paying approx 12m possible more to secure his services. |

Its funny when my fellow Arsenal fans bring up issues about other clubs spending power when our own club penny pinches and never tells the truth about money. |

Not so sure, you might have spent that on transfers but all the while whilst you buy these youngsters it means you can save a shitload of money by lowering the wage bill, which is where the majority of club's expenditure goes, as players with such small reputations cannot comand such large salaries. United are going backwards and really need some marquee signings for me, there's only so long they can rely on Scholes and Giggs. |

Why? I'm discussing the topic in hand, Arsenal are irrelevant to this debate. |

They aren't dropping 30m each on three or four world class players though are they? Which is what many of the fans seem to feel is necessary. |

really? lost two of their top players in the summer, including arguably the best player in the world and their currently 2nd in the league and narrowly missed out on the CL semi finals. as long as SAF is in charge that club will be going forward. forget Cantona, forget Beckham, forget Ronaldo. when Fergie goes that when they'll decline |

So they've lost players, done worse in the CL and are doing worse in the league - having lost six or seven times when the general quality is lower than last season anyway - and you say they haven't gone backwards!?!?!? |
