if they scrapped the whole designated player and salary cap rules?

would the league become bigger?

would it attract more higher profile players as the owners could flex their financial muscle without limit?

as a whole what would it be a benefit for fans in USA and the league itslef?

The fanbase and attendances are not large enough to scrap these rules really mate. If they did then the owners would be using their own personal finances to bring in big name players and maintain the teams, rather than the clubs be self sufficient. A dangerous path to go down although in the long term it could correct itself as the sport increases in popularity with more big names. Although, if i'm not mistaken, they attempted this back in the 70's with Besty, Pele etc. coming to play in the USA and it fell flat on its face.

though back then they scrapped the halfway line and put in two 35 yard offside area's shows just what kind of people were running the show at the time.

also in those days it was like a new discovery but now with the likes of the Premiership. la liga and Serie A screening every weekend, an established consistent world cup qualifying team, good players coming from the States and playing at a top level it could be a lot easier to make it a success?

Maybe you're right. I still don't think scrapping the salary cap is a good idea though, i like that rule in general and think it could be used in Europe to avoid domination by the same sides year in year out. They should probably raise the salary cap though and remove this designated player bollocks. They should just allow an annual budget of something like 10-15 million a year for wages and keep it as simple as that.

The league pays all the players, and allows each team around 2 to 2.5m in wages for the entire squad. The club itself is allowed to have two designated players whose wages they can cover themselves. If they elect to take on these designated palyers the first take around 400k out of the salary cap, and the second 325k. So in the case of the Galaxy they have Beckham and Donovan earning shit loads, and the rest of the team around 1.7 million dollars a year between them, or around 100,000 dollars per player. Hence why the standard is currently similar to league 1/league 2 football.

so a massive increase in the cap could attract better players and in turn raising the standard.

The club would have to pay the excess wages though to begin with, because the league has obviously put that 2.5m in place as that's all they can afford.
