Why would you not want a captain to be inspirational? All the best leaders are inspirational, Puyol is nothing but inspirational, he's not reliable or dependable, he just has stupid hair and flies in like a fuckwit, relying on Marquez (now Piqué) to keep him in check. Gerrard inspires his team, by the same token, Churchill was a great leader because he inspired his country. Sure, some inspirational people might not have leadership qualities but Gerrard very obviously does. Not all captains are inspirational, not all inspirational people are captains, however I would argue that when the two are combined you end up with truly great captains, eg 'Captain Fantastic', 'Mr Chelsea'.

The cricket examples were shit btw as there is so much more to being a cricket captain than to being a football captain.

Zidane was a great captain...

And true point there Cule, there is so much more to cricket captaincy. The game is virtually in the hands of the captain, a failure to pick the right set up after the toss, failure to expose certain situations, tactics, fielding set up, batting set up, etc.

From a footballing captain I want someone who everyone respects, looks up to, and trusts. But more than this, it has to be someone that you feel is fully behind the team or is each player's greatest supporter. For me, Gerrard just isn't that man, much in the same way that Rooney isn't either.

Does everyone at Liverpool respect Gerrard? Yes.

Does everyone look up to him? Yes.

Does everyone trust him? Yes.

Is he fully behind the team? Yes.

Will he back all his players to the hilt? Yes.

Is rolling's vendetta against Gerrard making him look like a muppet? Yes.

Bollocks, he's always fucking moaning at his players, exactly the same as Rooney. You can see it on his face the whole time, that same old ridiculously pained expression to the effect of 'I think Im better than all of you, why can't you be at my level?' even though he's barely a cut above Kuyt anymore.

A captain should be getting on to players, be it for poor decision making or whatever..

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.

I think that's just wrong mate, if you can find me an example of Gerrard moaning at his players then I might give what you say some credence, until then I just think you're getting boring.

You just need to get it out of your head that to be a captain you have to be a defensive player.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Ok, good examples of decent attacking captains:

1. Giggs - though not technically club captain
2. Shearer

I really cannot think of many more. It's far harder to lead your side as a flair player than it is as a defensively minded player. That's just a fact mate.

And Paddy, not in the manner that someone like Rooney does it though?

Zidane, carried his team to WC Finals as well as being captain. The French WC campaign was going down the shitter if it were not for the inspirational leadership of Zizou!

BS, it was Henry who saved France in the group stages frist of all. Zidane just came to the party in the big games like the small-time bottler he was.

I'd rather Zidane dicked about with Spain, Brazil, Portugal & Italy. As opposed to, Togo & Switzerland.

Yes so would I, but don't kid yourself, Henry was the main man throughout that tournament.

Fuck no was he.

How many goals did Henry score in the knock-outs? One, and even that was a simple ball into the net courtesy of an exquisite ball by Zidane.
