Away from Terry, and with football fans having always been known to relish in a bit of schadenfreude, Liverpool supporters might just start cruelly cheering for Portsmouth to go out of business. That's because Pompey face a winding up order next week over unpaid taxes and if they fold, the Reds will then steal a march on the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham in the race for a Champions League spot. The Sun cites Premier League rules that state that if a club goes out of business, all their results that season have to be scrapped, with the league then carrying on with 19 teams. In such a scenario, Arsenal and City would lose the six points they have earned against Pompey this season while Spurs' win against Avram Grant's side would also be chalked off. That would see Liverpool, who lost 2-0 at Fratton Park, leapfrog Spurs and move to within just two points of Arsenal, while City would drop down to seventh with their lost points. At the other end of the table, it is West Ham who lose out big time. The Hammers start the weekend sixth from bottom but would drop down to the bottom of the pile if Portsmouth go as they would lose the four points they have picked up against Pompey this term. They would be joined in the bottom two by Bolton with only two teams dropping down to the Championship. Let's hope it doesn't come to that...The uproar that would cause would be incredible if it had that much of an effect

absolute joke of a rule. How can you take points away after a game has been fairly won or drawn or lost. stupid. if anything they should just give automatic 3-0 wins to the teams still yet to play Portsmouth |

Yeah exactly Alfie. Imagine if it was between City and Liverpool for 4th place and City finished a point behind after this rule was applied...it would be crazy. We'd be hearing about that for ages. |

Should that be the case I think our owners might be slipping them a little bit of cash... |

I don't know tbh. I don't see the problem between one business man handing another business mam 10m outside of the football world as a good gesture, it wouldn't have to include the football landscape. Should that be against rules, I'm sure we could sign David James from them for 10m, pay them upfront and let him move here in the summer (at which point we loan him to them for 2 years). But either way, whatever anybody tries to do will not work because we all know how much the FA want Liverpool to finish in the top 4, we've seen it before and we'll probably see it again this season. |
