One of the best seasons I've ever seen. If his name was Rio Ferdinando Wrighty and Ant would say his 07/08 was the best defensive season of all-time. He's so underrated, people love to hate him because of who he is but what a natural, total defensive master.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Ant has been so biased against Ferdinand but I'm delighted that this hatred is starting to erode as now his honest opinion is shining through a little.

I love how you lot are always going on about how X or Y would be wanked if they were Italian :hysterics: Could say exactly the same thing about most people on this forum though, if Cassano was English Roonaldo would be calling him the greatest player to have ever lived...

Ferdinand was amazing that season. Better than Vidic 08/09 IMO, and the best season I've seen from a Utd defender since Jaap Stam's debut season. His performances against Liverpool (A) and Barcelona were truly outstanding.

His performance against Roma (a) when John O'Shea replaced Vidic at CB was heroic, and I mean absolutely heroic. What a leader, what a player.

Nesta circa 2003 was the best CB ever.

What relevance does that have? I agree, Nesta circa 2003 was the best CB ever, but in 2008 that changed.

Rio has never been anywhere near Nesta's level Scholes, don't even go there.

^^^ I agree. He's not even got to Ayala's level IMO.

Ayala was nothing special IMO.

Stam shits all over Rio.

Ah yeah Stam without a doubt, he was the best of Rio and Vidic rolled into one beast of a defender.

I thought Ayala was pretty good, at his best, better than Cannavaro. Really great reading of the game and his size never hindered him in any way.

Let's be clear though. The three of 'em were/are elite defenders of this generation. Nesta is #1 in my eyes and most people's eyes but between the other two, it's close, very close. Cannavaro probably gets more recognition given that he was a WC winning captain, and played right at the top really for Juventus and Real Madrid during his prime years. Valencia sort of went up and down for a few years but if he had played for an Italian club, or Real Madrid / Barca, playing regular CL football, it could have propelled his stature even more. Was at Milan at one stage but they weren't really the best at that time.

Pity. He has delivered some iconic defensive displays IMO. He could have been more but he was still a real class act.
