There are so many shit things about football at the moment; combined, the led me to become more dispassionate about football than I have for a long time: 1) The Media There was a reason John Terry asked to have a gagging order placed on his affair with Vanessa Perroncel: it's nobody's fucking business and all it will cause is problems for everyone. In a world cup year, the numerous campaigns that have now started to have the world's best defender, one of the few stars in a very average England lineup, sacked as captain of his country could well undermine once and for all England's chances of getting past the quarters. Maybe people are worried about him being a poor role model for kids, here's an idea: Don't fucking tell everyone about it then. Another peril of having little to talk about but lots to say is that the media has made it it's mission to destroy the reputation of these great players. JT, Robinho and Henry are all examples of this cuntishness. Robinho arrived in England a great player, but he hit a poor patch of form; the media launched a full scale crusade on the poor kid - only just settling in the country mind you - because apparently his work rate didn't match the wages he was paid. I'm sorry, but what fucking right do you have to say that you little cunts? The idea that wages should be proportional to work rate ridiculous, it's more jealousy than anything. Poisoning the minds of poor gullible little fans across the country who want to take their anger of having a shit job out on someone who actually has talent. Well done folks, you've just chased off another of the best players in the Premiership. And then lastly to Thierry Henry, the worst of all. The Premiership's best ever player, one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport, the player who was the darling of the British public to an extent where he even did Renault Clio adverts for us. Apparently that means nothing if he does a handball against Ireland. I might have understood if it was England, but fucking Ireland. Fuck off. People only like the Irish because they perceive them as being drunk all the time, because they have a cherry, freidnly accent and because they were playing the role of the plucky underdogs. If it had been Robbie Keane handballing it nobody would have complained. Utterly pathetic and a better insight to how shit the British media is than Henry's ability as a footballer. 2) The Premiership A once great league is slowly turning into merely another good league and it's depressing to see. Two years ago it had two out and out world class sides, the best around, it now has one side that barely scrapes into the top four in the world. Out have gone Alonso, Ronaldo, Robinho to be replaced by Aquilani, N'Zogbia and Adam Johnson. Liverpool have fallen to pieces, United look a shadow of the team they were two years ago, Arsenal are as erratic as ever and even Chelsea too have dropped massively from their zenith under Mourinho. Obviously it's hard to ask for an amazing league, but it's so much worse than it was in 06/07 / 07/08. This lack of quality throughout is evidently down to a lack of money - or a refusal to spend it - on the part of the major teams and to that extent it is understandable. However, employing better scouts cannot be a hard business and when I see that players like Silva, Perotti and Di Maria are being spurned so as to facilitate the signings of young pups such as Johnson, it's heartbreaking. Some of it is obviously down to a wank legal system which prevents talent from being brought into a country. People should never, upon being offered a world class job with high wages, and therefore being able to contribute considerably to the tax system, be refused entry to this country because of their circumstances of birth, it's just wrong. There's a United Nations resolution advocating freedom of movement and this is the sort of shit that a 'defender of democracy' seeks to consecrate it with. Rubbish. 3) African Cup of Nations What a pile of shit. Why teams aren't being given enough security so that they can't go to a fucking game without being shot I have no idea, and why people would want to shoot a football team leaves me further baffled. But then for Africa to put that behind them and to serve up the worst tournament I've ever seen is just wrong, it's a let down to the fans, those who died and the European clubs who've had to pay for them to be out there. I'm not a happy bunny. There are obviously some good things going on in football atm but they're running thin on the ground on the whole; I'd like to know if anyone shares these views or am I just getting angry about nothing. I fully agree with the first half focusing on the British media being the biggest cunts on the planet, poisoning the minds of easily led people like Reebok. The second half about the Premiership's dip in standard and the ACN i'm not convinced on, but we'll leave that out for now. I find it so ironic that while the media are trying to brainwash the nation into thinking England can win the World Cup, by placing Rooney on a pedestal, they are also trying to tear any hope we have to shreds by ripping into JT. fucking corrupt cunts, all they really care about is making money. |

Several points: I must say, it's good that these comments from you are coming at this point in the season, otherwise the situation really would be terminal Whether it's crossed your mind or not, this period in football is notoriously boring. The January transfer window is well and truly shut, but it's generally a massive let down regardless. Also, everything is so far away from its conclusion - which is probably the most exciting part of each year - while the CL is a long time away from restarting. You wait until your weeknights are action-packed with England vs Milan games, I dout you'll hold such a forlorn view of the game. But generally speaking, the game in its present state is flourishing. We have a side in Barcelona FC that's operating at the highest level, demolishing teams ruthlessly and beautifully in their bid to claim the 'best team ever' alongside a newly formed Galactico era in Madrid. We have an epic battle emerging for the title of World's Best Player between Ronaldo and Messi; a battle which shows no signs of subsiding. But away from the highest orders, there are signs of growth and development throughout. Mancini is building an exciting team on the Blue side of Manchester, full of ambition, hunger and pure lust for success. Love them or hate them, you can't deny that it makes football more entertaining. All these things being in place suggests to me that this is a far more personal thing. I've never been more enthused about football, but I can understand why you might not be. For most football fans, supporting a club is by far and away the most important component of this 'love for the game' idea. Now I'm not saying that your support for Barcelona is dwindling, but it might be fair to say that it's nowhere near as satisfying for you. As you've told me on many occasions, the club have become far more of a winning machine than a source of genuine entertainment. The sale of Eto'o and - for you - the dissappearance of Yaya can't have helped. This, put together with the fact that there's nothing else for this side to win, might be a reason for your lessened interest. My advice to you would be to focus on the things that made you love the game previously. This is a World Cup year, and epic things are going to happen before its conclusion. I couldn't be more excited about the way this season is shaping up as a whole, but here's a little video to help you along the way... MAGICCCCC Edited by rollingstone, Feb 1 2010, 10:03 PM.

First point, yeah fair enough. Second point it was more an attack on the English game than football in general, the Spanish game is flourishing at the moment, hence my lack of referencing to it throughout. The media however, understandably, focusses on English football, as does the Premiership, so you haven't really addressed what's annoyed me at all, rather, like me, looked to foreign shores, foreign investors and foreign national sides for your bright points. The games between FC Chelsea and FC Man United vs the Milans should be good though.

To be fair, you said you were dissaffected with football as a whole. You're barely ever going to enjoy the English game I'm afraid, such is the nature of either your elective obstinence to liking English players and its NT or your natural wiring - you know which I think it is! There have been some fantastically exciting games of late, and the United-Arsenal game at the weekend was a fucking classic. I think it's up to you whether or not you choose to engage with English football IMO, cos I'm bloody loving it atm and I'd hazard that most people share my opinions. This is possibly the most interesting title race we've had for years. The media point I'll give you, but it's always been like that... Edited by rollingstone, Feb 1 2010, 10:33 PM.

Man Utd vs. Man City matches. Those have certainly brought some life back into the Manchester Derby. It's a shame with Liverpool though, lack of competition down the river has somewhat dampened the PL title race. |

Agree with that point yeah, I think that's the best thing to come out of this season so far, hopefully United can keep up with them in coming seasons so that it will be a real rivalry. Rolling your point about never liking the english game is grime I'm afraid, I've really enjoyed in previous seasons, particularly Liverpool and Chelsea's title chases in the two years previous. Give me some more classic games in the PL this season other than United - City... Edited by elcule, Feb 1 2010, 10:42 PM.

Well there aren't too many, by virtue of you asking for 'classics'...which is the same in any season. United-City back in September was a very memorable match, as I think have both Arsenal - United ties. I'll keep thinking though. |

By the sounds of it you've enjoyed this season because United have been in some 'memorable games'... I only said classics because you claimed Arsenal - United was one. |

Man City have been the highlight of the season as far as I'm concerned actually, their game against Chelsea was brilliant, likewise against Burnley, Arsenal and Sunderland. Liverpool's demise, for anyone who isn't simply being vindictive, has been sad to see and with teams like Newcastle lacking I just think the league has lost a lot compared to last year. Hopefully it will pick up and we'll have a decent title race, I can't see it though
