Well Evra was pretty much our best player in the first leg, so Richards can't have been that great... though tbf, we're talking about the best left back in the world here, along with Ashley Cole. England's defence has to be considered in this debate. I don't think there is a better international CB pairing than Terry and Rio, both out and out world class (as long as Rio gets his form and fitness back which he looks like doing). Ashley Cole as already mentioned is the best left back in the world. At right back we will have to see. Johnson adds an incredibly valuable attacking dimension to our play, if his name was Roberto Carlos people would be excited by him... problem is he is dodgy defensively. Brown on the form of 07/08 is a really solid right back, fantastic defensively even if he hasn't got Johnson's panache going forward. If either or both of these players are fit and playing well, then we will have the best back four in the world, we can switch between Johnson and Brown depending on the circumstances, eg Johnson vs Algeria and Brown vs Brazil. Problem is our keeper though, that's still up in the air. I would suggest though that as long as he's solid, not dodgy, and does the basics right without being spectacular and without being close to top 5 in the world, our keeper won't matter all that much. Best back four in the world, must be. Italy just don't have a good left back, a good right back, or Nesta, leaving them with just one out and out world class defender. We have three. Puyol is slightly suspect but I guess still in the bracket just below world class, Pique is world class for sure. Ramos? Just below the world class bracket I'd suggest and I don't even know who their left back is, so Spain don't trump England either. Brazil have the best two right backs in the world, not that the second one will ever get a game cos Maicon is just the dogs bollocks. Lucio is an absolute warrior and Thiago Silva has looked good when I've seen him. Marcelo is a very attacking left back, no bad thing but I reckon he's a glen Johnson equivalent on the left. You could argue that Brazil have 2 world class players in their back four. I think they have the next best defensive unit after England. Zanetti at right back, I'm not sure if he has the legs he once had. Heinze is a very very good player, in that bracket just below world class. Problem is the organisation for Argentina, Maradona doesn't have a clue what he's doing. |

Let's remember with Spain though that their midfield creates a considerable defensive barrier, much as it works in the same way for Barca. England lack that extra barrier in the midfield with average shit like Barry wasting a space. |

GPT. Hence why I was careful to talk about back four only, and the majority of my speil was talking about on paper only as well. I still think England's defence has yet to gel into the World Class unit it should be. |

Let's also remember that a defence includes the goalkeeper. Spain have Casillas, Brazil Julio Cesar and Italy Buffon; England can't even decide on the best of their bad bunch. Also I wish people would get it into their fucking heads that Rio Ferdinand is not even near world class at the moment. Puyol is miles better. Miles. |

Puyol is not miles better than Ferdinand at all, I know people keep saying 'if' he gets back to his best, but he's not far from it at times anyway he's just been plagued by injuries. All I know is Puyol could only have dreamed of being as good ad Ferdinand was on Wednesday. |

Elcule made up his mind on Rio about this time last season, maybe a couple of months later. He can't seem to understand that him wanting something to happen doesn't mean it will. |

Puyol Pique is a better partnership. More athletic, just as good aerially, far better on the ball, etc, etc. |

As far as I'm concerned, Italy always has the best defence. Not only do they always have the best selection of defenders, but they know the art of defending better than anyone. This will pretty much always be the case. |

Lol it's not that, he's just been wank everytime I've seen him this season except maybe the last two games; the likelihood is he'll be injured again, and I'm not going to say someone's immediately world class again after he has one good game. Anyway Sam, you can fuck off, you already told me you know nothing about defending / defenders. |

That was the performance of a warrior, Ferdinand's was that of a pure thinker, footballing intelligence and experience. Anybody can be a warrior, only great defenders can put in performances like Ferdinand's. |
