Ireland last night accused FIFA of ‘bottling it’ after they let World Cup cheat Thierry Henry off scot free. France’s former Arsenal striker cost the Republic a possible place in the finals with his deliberate handball in November’s play-off. ![]() But FIFA, fearing the ramifications of banning him for the opening games in South Africa, concluded there was ‘no legal foundation’ for retrospective action. Cheat: Thierry Henry Ireland’s Hull defender Kevin Kilbane, said: ‘If FIFA had decided to ban him for one or two games in the finals it would have opened them up to too many problems, so they had no choice but to bottle it. ‘It is not a surprise and I did not expect anything else. I suppose they would be wondering where it would stop. If they had taken action against Henry, they would be under pressure to act against any player guilty of deliberate handball in any game in the future, and that was never going to happen. ‘I don’t think any decision regarding the outcome of the game or any disciplinary matter was ever going to affect Henry, and he would probably have had a legal team ready to strike. France and Thierry Henry were always going to go to the World Cup finals.’ Ireland led 1-0 in extra time of the second leg in Paris and seemed to be heading for penalties, at worst, until Henry’s handball led directly to William Gallas equalising, leaving France 2-1 winners on aggregate. The FA of Ireland and captain Robbie Keane were so incensed they demanded a replay, then suggested they should be allowed to go to the World Cup as a 33rd team. Both pleas fell on deaf ears. FIFA did agree to consider further action against Henry but the statement said: ‘There was no legal foundation for the committee to consider the case because handling the ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement of the FIFA disciplinary code. ‘There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions for any incidents missed by match officials.’ |

Diego- the twat which is henry shows his true colours, maradona was never forgiven for his handball in 86, will this twat get the same treatment I was reading Dagunners comments for the match and I have to say that I am horrified by what I saw if I had known what he said I would have decked him. How dare he say Ireland were pathetically poor when they were absolutely outstanding that night and totally outclassed the French on their own turf. The French were so outplayed that even the French public admitted that Ireland were robbed and that they are only at the WC by default. FRANCE HAVE INDIVIDUALS AND NOTHING ELSE It's sad that a worse team will be at the WC but life can be very cruel Edited by Homer, Jan 19 2010, 03:49 AM.

The only horrfic comments come from you time and time again calling Henry a twat. The guy is an out and out legend for any Arsenal fan regardless of this. Most players do what he did week in week maybe not exactly the same but he cheated (Even though some say its debateable) but players dive all the time trying to geta penalty which may lead to a certain goal. What Eduardo did aggainst Celtic is no better than this and will he be remembered like that? No. He got away with it thats the only difference from him being remembered like that and from you not even remembering about this. Anyway they were robbed of a chance to go through it wasn't set in fucking stone like some are making out. Edited by Goonie, Jan 19 2010, 05:52 AM.

I don't see why FIFA are bottlers. What Henry did was wrong but stuff like that happens all the time, okay maybe not as blatant and rarely does it pretty much decide a match of such magnitude but that's just very unfortunate, it's very unfair everyone in the football world knows this but the way the FAI are constantly pursuing this is an embarrassment to us. Most people here are still seething over how it all went down but we know it's done and we're not going to the World Cup. End of story. It's just now we don't have much sympathy from outside, not that we wanted it in the first place, we're looking stupid now and by we I mean the FAI. Everyone in this country knows they're a pack of clowns, out and out fucking wallies, the mere sight of that Delaney cunt makes my blood boil. It would've been nice if it all didn't happen, if we had went out fairly, or better still if we went through but it hasn't happened. We, as Irish have nothing to be ashamed about, the majority of people here have taken it even tough we're bitterly dissapointed and our players acted wonderfully on the night, looking back, I'm proud that we didn't make a big fuss an took the harsh defeat on the chin because I know some other countries would've caused fucking ructions at the final whistle. |

It would have been wrong to do anything. I was pissed off at Henry and Ireland were most certainly cheated, however ignoring that it was a WC play-off game, it was just a football match. And if the referee doesn't punish it during the game then they can't come back to it later and ban him or whatever. If a United player did it against City tonight or vice versa nothing would be done about it. It shouldn't be a different rule just because it was a huge game. |

As Goonie mentioned, the only horrific comments came from you, after blasting Thierry Henry. What the fuck were you playing at? Arsenal's greatest ever player, the game's greatest ever player, and you have the gall to criticise him like that. ARE YOU AN ARSENAL FAN? ARE YA?! Show some fucking respect after the joy he's brought to you over many years. |

he cheated in a huge match and his actions in effect cost ireland the chance to go to south africa. like all cheating i would like the person to be punished, although im not sure how fifa should or shouldnt go about this. but leaving henry to get off scot free is bottling it. fact |

Banning Henry would mean to not seem like inconsistant retards they would have to do this with every situation like this. The size of the match should have no relevance, cheating is cheating. |

All they could do is make ANY intentional handball, dive, or any cheating of that ilk, a straight red and a 3 match ban. That would really be the end of the English dream of Rooney guiding us to glory next summer. |
