Arsenal have held talks with the father and agent of Spanish whizkid Sergio Canales over a potential move from Racing Santander. Gelo Canales visited London on Monday to meet Arsenal representatives to find out what role his son would play at the club. Gelo, who has been urged by Johan Cruyff to allow his son to develop at Santander, has already met Real Madrid officials and is weighing up the possibility of his son moving to the Premier League. ![]() Arsenal are keen to sign a striker who is good in the air and, above all, Canales’ impressive debut season continued at the weekend as he scored in Racing’s 1-1 draw with Valladolid. As revealed by Sportsmail, Canales’ father has also met Manchester City and plans talks with Chelsea. He wants to be certain Sergio, 18, will play an important role at his next club. ![]() Eye for goal: Sergio Canales in action for Racing Santander against Valladolid on Sunday Real are the favourites to sign him but he said last week: ‘I won’t discount any option.’ Gelo said: ‘My son will go to a club where he will play plenty of football. That’s what interests us.’ |

He needs to stay at Racing this season and next season, it will be awful for his development to move and not play. Maybe Arsenal could sign him and loan him back to Racing as Madrid did with Garay. The kid looks absolutely brilliant but needs time. |
![]() Winner. "If I go to Anfield and someone puts the ball into the box and Carragher hammers it out of play the fans applaud. At Camp Nou you would never be applauded for that." - Xavi | |

Manchester United are believed to be closely monitoring the progress of Racing Santander's much-coveted midfielder Sergio Canales. Both Real Madrid and Arsenal have been heavily linked with the 18-year-old in recent days, but the Manchester Evening News reports that United have now added themselves to the list of clubs tracking the player. United's European scout Martin Ferguson, brother of manager manager Sir Alex, apparently watched Canales in action for Santander against Real Valladolid last week. The youngster netted a game-saving equaliser to follow on from his two-goal display the game before against Sevilla. Real Madrid are still believed to lead the hunt for Canales, whose contract expires until the end of the season. They may well decide to act before then though, with Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich all believed to be tracking the player as well as United and Arsenal. |
