Valencia coach Unai Emery has called for allowances to be made in the laws of the game to allow four substitutes to be used per team instead of three. His comments came at his post-match press conference after his side had defeated Villarreal on Sunday.

The Basque coach justified his petition by arguing that in the modern game, matches are far more intense and physically demanding and that such a change would decrease player fatigue and create less injuries.

"This [fatigue] could be reduced if ,in every match, one was able to make one more change in the team," declared Emery, who cited that just as the number of substitutions was once increased from two to three players, now it could be changed from three to four.

Emery made these comments after being asked why he did not substitute David Villa in yesterday's match when the 4-1 scoreline was practically settled. Emery declared that after Valencia's elmination at the hands of Deportivo in the Copa del Rey, Villa is being inundated with minutes and cannot play 80 matches in a season.

No, most team dont make there 3rd change until injury time anyway, so if they got another sub then they would bring 2 players on on seperate occasions to waste time..

Don't understand why it's stupid tbh, good shout, though obviously the ultra-conservative reebok would disagree. It favours the big teams massively, but yeah, I think sometimes you need more than three subs, especially if you want to change a game.

Winner.

exactly, ONLY the bigger clubs who can afford to have over £30m worth of talent on the bench will benefit. obviously this manager is a bit clueless when using his subs or too scared to sub some of his star players. I've never seen the top managers question the three limit rule. if we're going to add another sub to the limit then how long before we start allowing 5 or 6 or fuck it the whole bench will get to play as they've made the effort to put a kit on and warm up to go on. three subs in quite enough considering most squads now have around 20-30 players to choose from in their match day 18.

I think four subs would be a good idea but only if it applies to extra-time. Making a substitution and making the right substitution is part of good management, so I don't think it should be made any easier. Three is enough, four in extra-time would be understandable considering the state some players can get in after 100 minutes of running around.
