i tend to agree, he was great at spurs, maybe the level of expectation at united compared to what he's experienced at other clubs is too much for him, |

Berbatov brings composure to our play going forward. He's always there making himself perfectly available for a pass and let's be honest he has to because Carrick, Fletcher and pretty much everyone bar Scholes isn't going to be threading amazing passes into our strikers. Having Scholes alone in the team without Berbatov or Giggs isn't even enough anymore. One of those two have to play otherwise we're a little bit hopeless in the final third, so, so predictable. The difference with Berbatov is he keeps the ball and distributes it better than Giggs can. When Giggs is on form, yeah he's great but other times he gives the ball away constantly. Dimitar has never had a game like that for us, he does the simple things well all the time. If Berbatov doesn't play, we give the ball away more often and that means the opposition are getting at us more often and that's putting our defence under more pressure. So saying we have to be tight in defence when he plays is way off IMO, it's the complete opposite. He does need to score more goals though and everyone knows that but it must be hard for him if as you say, the 76,000 in the stadium are getting really pissed off with him while they chant Rooney, Rooney for 10 mins after he wins the ball back even if he's the one who gave it away in the first place! He's just a victim of his own idiosyncracy and the fact that the midfield who should be supplying him with passes is just not good enough only compounds his problems. Then like 7Seven7 says in England everyone wants a player who runs around all the time, it's all going against him, you can't help but feel sorry for him. |

united have a style, a style which requires two mid midfielders(or wingers) a cf and a man operating off the cf, andy cole and dwight york were great examples of this as were solskjaer and sheringham, we get or attempt to get crosses in as often as possible, with the current strikers this isnt possible and our attacks break down easily, you cannot play through the middle for berbatov all the time, its easy to defend, and regardless who we have in midfield providing the passes its much easier to defend, than getting the ball pulled back to on coming players is, how often have we seen balls fly across the 6yard box with no striker in sight this season, too often, when you look where the strikers are, rooneys out wide and berbatov outside the 18 yard box, it doesnt take that much effort to get into the box and at least try to be on the end of a cross youve compared berbatovs passing to giggs, giggs is a wide or now a cm player, berbatov regardless of what people say was brought as a striker, a striker is there to score goals and to be a focal point to the attack, maybe he does the latter better than the former, but he doesnt do it often enough down the years ive seen some great number 9s at united, pearson, jordan, cole, van nistelrooy, saha all in different eras but all contributed goals and more, now it seems its only matters to contribute a fancy touch, its not fancy touchs and the like that win trophys, they only win trophys when theres an end product and berbatov doesnt provide that end product Edited by diego, Jan 18 2010, 08:26 PM.

IAN WRIGHTS EXPERT VIEWS I’d pick Tevez over Berba THE Running Man might just have Manchester United running scared at Eastlands tonight. Carlos Tevez is the non-stop striker who was basically forced out of the Old Trafford door. But I have to ask myself what set of fans are smiling now. I bet you that over at City, the grins are wider than the Manchester ship canal because they've taken a United reject who has turned out to be a stunning success in a sky blue shirt. Mind you, I thought Tevez was a stunning success in red and I can't come to any other conclusion than it was wrong to let him move on. For me, Dimitar Berbatov, who has replaced Tevez, has not done enough at United to suggest he was worth the £32m paid to Spurs. Maybe the money men at United thought there was no place for both when it came to balancing the wage bill. Maybe manager Alex Ferguson thought he couldn't balance the team properly with both - but I know which one I'd have picked. It's not just my opinion either but a conclusion backed up by facts when you look closely at the performance charts. Carlos has 15 goals this season - more than twice the seven Berbatov has. Berbatov has not scored against any of the serious title rivals either, his victims being the likes of Burnley, Hull and Wolves. Sure, every goal matters, but they matter more when you can blow one of your top rivals out of the title race. Tevez has stepped up to the plate, he has hit the target in the big games against Chelsea and Arsenal - games that decide the destiny of league titles and on whose shelf a cup will sit. There's also the matter of work-rate. Tevez runs tirelessly. How many times have you seen Tevez whip up the crowd by sheer effort or produce a flash of inspiration? For whatever reason, and a minor knee injury has been talked about, I don't think you can say Berbatov's done the business. You have to go back a long, long way, 70 years or so, for the last time City were the true top dogs and Running Man could be the catalyst for it to happen again. I fancy City big-time over the Carling Cup semi-final two legs. The big question is what kind of team will Fergie put out. It wouldn't surprise me if he rolled out his big guns, including Berbatov. But one thing I can assure you, Berba won't be as influential as Tevez. |

We had the problem with our strikers not getting in the box as soon as RvN left and we had it briefly when Saha and Rooney plaed up front regularly but how long was that for? 6 months of the 06/07 season. Even in 07/08 I would look in dismay at Rooney and Tevez not being in the box enough but the difference is we Ronaldo a genuinely world class player. We had Scholes and Carrick in very good form. The 4-4-2 is not going to work in every generation, it's easy to say Utd have a style, two strikers, two wingers but even in 07/08, the side tat many believe was our best in recent years (Although I don't) that was no 4-4-2, we didn't have one striker, we had 2 forwards, Rooney who was on the left and Tevez who wandered around, often aimlessly and helped create space for Ronaldo who was the man who produced. Right now we have Valencia on the wing, he's alright, he's made a good contribution but he's one of the most predictable wide players I've ever seen, Beckham was a bit predictable aswell but he had a way of striking the ball that made him truly special a real asset, Valencia does not have this. The other side who do we have, Giggs? He's old can't work as a wide player like he used to and the fact he is too old to be a regular counts him out pretty much. Obertan? Looks good, hasn't fully settled. Tosic? Reserves. Park? Decent.. Nani? Rubbish. The fact is out wide we haven't got the sort of quality we should have. Then you have the midfield which I've already said is not really up to scratch. I don't find it at all surprising that our forwards struggle at times. Let's not forget that Rooney is not having a better season than the last in terms of general gameplay and influence on the team, okay he's scoring lots of goals, a fair few pens in there by the way but he's not at his best, so I ould argue that he struggles in some way too with the service he's getting or not getting. Berbatov. It's like he's in the wrong team but if you asked me now what is our problem, there's no way I will tell you it's Berbatov because he's probably the most talented player in our squad, only Scholes matches up to him in terms of technical ability so he has to stay, it's a new midfield that we need, I'd be comfortable enough with Valencia given his contribution and Obertan will prove to be an asset I feel. But when people look at our team and they say oh well we're not playing like we did with Ronaldo and all that and they point the finger at Berbatov, well I'm sorry but it's purely clueless, we've hd problems with midfield for around 2 years now, still it hasn't been addressed, most of us here know that this is the one area we need to improve on, the one area which is probably not even in the top 5-6 in the league, can you believe that? The three time champions and we have a midfield that's considerably weaker than most of our rivals, never mind better, as it should be. The way everyone blames Berbatov is sickening. |
