Liverpool to trade Babel for Kenwyne Jones

RAFA BENITEZ plans to land hitman Kenwyne Jones in a stunning swap with Ryan Babel.

The Liverpool chief hopes to agree a deal with Sunderland as he desperately needs cover for crocked hotshot Fernando Torres.

And it will see out-of-favour Dutchman Babel head for the Stadium of Light.

But Benitez faces a fight with Aston Villa for unsettled Trinidad and Tobago ace Jones, 25.

The Kop boss has been chasing a back-up striker to Torres for months with the Spaniard plagued by injury this season.

That hunt became an urgent priority on Wednesday when Torres damaged a cartilage in the shock FA Cup defeat to Reading.

He needs surgery and will be out for six weeks.

Babel, 23, has been an £11.5million Mersey flop since moving from Ajax 2½ years ago, starting just 24 league games.

Benitez will need some hard bargaining for Jones after Sunderland boss Steve Bruce claimed he was worth £40m on his day.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill is plotting a £12m move for the Black Cats forward.

Bruce has already knocked back an £11m offer from Birmingham while Stoke are also keen.

Lol there's no way you'd rather have Jones, that's a really simple minded view. Sunderland would be getting a player with a ton of ability, a matchwinner with the potential to be one of the league's top wingers, someone who after a good run of games in the team could really move the team forward single handedly. In exchange for what? A lanky target man who doesn't have much scope for improvement and could really easily be replaced. You could sign Heskey for 4m and do this trade and have a drastically improved side and for the price of 4m. No brainer for me.

Apparantly Babels on his way to Turky.

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.

Babel would be a really good signing imo, even if that means losing Jones. His quality hasn't been the issue at Liverpool, rather Rafas total mis-management of his ability. There are plenty of big, low scoring, target mean out there but not so many players of Babels ability that would be willing to join Sunderland. A winner for Sunderland imo. Not so sure about Liverpool but I'd hazard a guess at loser.

No chance Bruce if you do this you can fuck off. We have no replacement forwards in the pipeline, we want money or no deal. Babel can be good yes, I'd have him here, but for Jones? Nah, no fecking way. He's a monster on his day and had a good game at the weekend. Keep Jones and see how he turns out towards the end of the season, if he fails to deliver, sell him for 15-20 in the summer.

Babel is a better striker than Jones

But he's not what Sunderland need. If this move were to go ahead Sunderland would have to sign another target man type striker, and have Babel playing out wide. No way would they function with Bent and Babel upfront.

Heskey would be a much more viable option and I think he'd welcome to move too.
