AT the start of the season, when I dared to suggest Liverpool would struggle to make the top four and Arsenal could challenge for the title, most people laughed.

And those were just the kind ones.

Some from the red half of Merseyside were rather more blunt in their ridicule.

How could Liverpool possibly not be right up there challenging for the title as well as Champions League glory was the polite gist of what many irate Scousers had to say.

As for Arsenal, well, not a bad group of young players most agreed but they would be way off the pace and the most vulnerable of the established Big Four.

Yet if Arsenal win at Bolton today then turn them over again on Wednesday, the Gunners will be right on the heels of leaders Chelsea.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are not just a broken team - they are a broken club.

Certainly, boss Rafa Benitez's is a busted flush.

The only surprising thing is it's only now that the majority of their fans are beginning to wake up and smell the coffee.

Of course it's becoming a bit more serious for Liverpool than missing out on the title for a 20th year running, given the club's financial situation.

If Liverpool end up having to sell Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard just to make ends meet, one wonders whether the club will ever regain their superpower status.

In contrast, Arsenal are heading in the opposite direction.

The Gunners have gone through a period of financial pain after moving stadium but are now in such a strong position that they don't have to sell prized asset Cesc Fabregas.

But, even if they did let the player go, boss Arsene Wenger already has a fine replacement in Aaron Ramsey.

It is to the credit of those who run the club that they have resisted the quick fix despite having not won a league title in six years.

Yes, they have foreign investors but Arsenal is still run by Arsenal people.Unlike others at the top, the Gunners remain an English club.

And when Wenger dips into the transfer market, he goes for the player, not the name - just look at Andrey Arshavin.

What a joy it has been to watch them this season.

And how great it would be for the health of the English game if they went on to win the title - proving it doesn't just take money to buy success or the lack of it to cause failure, as a manager like Benitez would have you think.

I seem to recall that you actually said Liverpool would be strong challengers for the title and were particularly strident about this when Ant suggested they would struggle to make the top 4.
