Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has revealed that he came very close to joining Arsenal instead of Olympiakos in 2005.

The 26-year-old has since become one of Europe's finest defensive midfielders and continues to attract attentions from the Premier League too, with a clutch of England's top clubs said to be tracking him.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea as well as the Gunners were said to be interested in securing his services in the summer as he entered contract talks at the Camp Nou.

That interest has reportedly continued into this transfer window, and Toure admits that he would like to play in England's top flight one day.

"I was disappointed and never understood why [Arsenal manager Arsene] Wenger did not want to close the deal," he told Spanish newspaper Marca, referring to the potential deal in 2005.
"But one day I would like to play in the Premier League."

Winner.

Whilst Toure is hardly the best in his position it's clear that he'd be an improvement on Song, so it's odd that Wenger didn't sign him for the small amount he would have needed to splash out. I can't remember though what Arsenals defensive midfield options were at that time though. Perhaps his position was already full.

Wenger didn't sign him because of work permit issues.

Also, we had a peak Gilberto at the time.

it would have made sense to sign him as they had sold Vieira.

Ok. WP issues makes sense. I did have it in my mind that Gilberto was still at a good level at that time, but I couldn't remember. Ta.

Err, why? Vieira was sold as his replacement was Cesc. Why would we bring in a DM to replace a then very attacking CM?

True. Viera was playing the advanced role of a box to box CM at that moment in time, still though it was obvious that replacing him with Cesc would lose a lot of physical presence so it would have been logical to bring in a bit of muscle.

they had flamini and fabregas coming through but would have been a good player to add to their depth. can't see how wrighty see's him as over rated. arsenal would be a lot better off with him

Sure, for depth back then he would have been a good signing, ie, back up for Gilberto. But Wenger was moving towards a more mobile dual box to box system, hence he bought Flamini, Diaby, Denilson, and Diarra.

In the current team Yaya would be a marginal upgrade on Song, but its not worth spending 15M+ for him.

Reyes was all add on clauses and I don't think it did end up over £15m and Hleb was £10.5m I think.
