Probably would of ruined his leg so that when he was 40/50 he would of hardly been able to walk on it.
Would you trade a crutch when your 50 for a professional football career? I would..
I would too, I'd give anything, obviously Ashton wouldn't, hence why I find his attitude disgusting.
Would you give up Laura though? :D

DEAN ASHTON quit football yesterday and admitted: I'll never be able to run again.

The former West Ham and England striker opened his heart to SunSport in an exclusive emotion-charged interview.

Ashton, 26, said: "It's a rubbish situation. I just want to be able to walk properly and, at the moment, I cannot.

"My health is obviously more important than football. I was told if I kept trying to play football, I might never walk again.

"I am going to hospital on Tuesday for a fifth operation.

"It's unlikely I will ever be able to jog again but right now, I can't walk properly.

"My left ankle is still very sore. It will be a while before I feel OK and get over this disappointment.

"There is a bit of bitterness and I think 'Why me?'. It's a sad part of football."

Ashton gave up his fight to play again after failing to recover from an ankle injury caused by Shaun Wright- Phillips on England duty in August 2006.

Ashton, a £7.25million signing from Norwich in January 2006, realised his career was over when he broke down again in training last August.

He added: "I was never the same, I was always in pain."

West Ham are now looking to claim off the FA's insurers.

Ashton is looking at other avenues of compensation from the FA's insurers as they, along with Chelsea, who Wright-Phillips played for at the time, could be liable.

Sad to see him retire at such a young age but he's dead right to do so. when you're in that much of a state, it's time to pack it in and forget about playing football. He's got fuck all to be ashamed of, any person with sense would do the same. I'm sure he loves football and all that but who gives a fuck about playing when your health is at risk.

I did like him as a player, some man for volleys and overheads. A real powerful striker and a handfull for any defender on his day.

Not gonna pick on the individual but that post up there was pure shit. Why attempt to play on when the long term state of his leg is at risk?

I would've battled on for a few more years at least, such a poor attitude.
shut up ya poof
Poof? No. Warrior, winner or battler would have sufficed.
Your in no position to question his attitude.
Yes I am, at the age of 26 you have 8 years or so to remain focused and try to make as much as you can out of your career. I wouldn't care if it took until I was 30 until I recovered, if you really loved football you'd do all you can to return to the game, even if it meant going down to a league 1 side because you're now 30 and haven't played for 5 years. It really is a poor attitude to retire at 26, regardless of how much pain or how much hard work it will take.
So you'd jeopordise your long term health to play some scattered minutes of proffesional football, all of which would be inconsiquential any way because you wouldn't be fit enough to make an impact? You can't make that assessment unless your in that position. It's not about playing through pain its that if he carried on he might not be able to walk.

sad to see him go but he had to if he wanted to be able to walk in the future.

as for the people saying that its a poor attitude, your health is your wealth.i love football.i love watching it and playing it but if i had the choice to carry on playing but risk notbeing able to walk or to quit and have the ability to walk, i know what i'd choose.
