ALEX FERGUSON saluted Michael Owen as the striker's hat-trick sent a World Cup message to Fabio Capello.

Manchester United beat Wolfsburg 3-1 to reach the Champions League last 16 as Group B winners.

And Owen left little doubt that, on this form, he should be in Capello's England squad for South Africa.

United boss Fergie said: "As Michael has proved many times, he is one of the best strikers around."

Owen has started just eight games for United this season. But Fergie believes performances like last night's will see him push for a regular place.

He added: "Absolutely. At the end of the day, the evidence is always on the football field and Michael has given plenty tonight.

"His training performances have improved steadily and I am delighted with his performance tonight."

Owen, who is 30 on Monday, praised United's patched-up team. He said: "Me getting three goals will grab the headlines but it was a great team performance."

hopefully Ferguson doesn't bench him at the weekend. If he can stay fit and score a fair amount of goals then it will be hard to overlook the guy for the finals. His record speaks for itself and he's still a big game player.

He should definitely be in the squad.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

everyone keeps saying that if we were losing he would be a great option but so are defoe and crouch. with rooney and heskey starting im afraid there is no space for him.

Defoe lacks intelligence around and inside the box. Good finisher and has a lot of pace but he lacks the ability to bring others in to the game. Very much doubt he would an impact against the bigger nations.

Heskey should not even be mentioned. Kevin Davies does exactly the same for us week in week out. Heskey only gets praised because of the good players around him. Average player with an easy job.

I would say not at present. Don't let this hat-trick mask what has been a fairly uneventful season for Owen so far. He's often left on the bench with not even a cameo appearance, and he's had several outings where he appeared sluggish and blunt.

Bottom line is that he's not playing enough football to be in the England squad, and he's missing too many chances when he does play to warrant him being a useful 'last 20 minute' option against any world class opposition England may face next summer.

However more games, and the better chance conversion rate that I think would come with them, and he's surely a must.

that hat-trick was always going to start a bandwaggon of some sort for some but the majority seem to of had these opinions well before last nights performance. if anything i think it's enhanced the opinion rather than started a bandwaggon. In my opinion he has always had the ability to play at the top level and last night proved that against good opposition.

I don't think Crouch has ever scored when he's come off the bench for England.

Well done on 1000 posts reebok, i have a few digs at you, but you really do make me laugh; hope you stick around

I said at the start of the season that Owen and Rooney will be first choice for the World Cup (check the outrageous predictions thread :cleverclogs: ) and I think they may well be. Obviously it depends on a lot of factors such as Owen remaining fit, but I honestly think Owen offers more to United's shape, and complements Rooney far better than Berbatov.

We know he can get goals, and he has the experience that Defoe and Bent - both of whom have never scored against a decent side - lack. I'm all for it, there's a definite gap to be filled next to Rooney and Owen has the potential, given a good run in the United side, to file it.

Winner.

Yeh I know, and this morning I was halfway through a post calling you a clueless twat before thinking better of it.

Owen and Rooney is a horror front-pairing.

It really isn't. It stops Rooney being forced to play CF and legitimises him getting involved heavily with link-up play while also providing a significant goal-threat through Owen. I think it could work, and I'm sure we will see it in action at some point this season.
