Lmao racism has always been a big issue, don't think recent events has made any referees extra careful.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Police could get involved in Clattenburg case

Mark Clattenburg is facing the prospect of a police and Football Association investigation into allegations he used "inappropriate language" towards Chelsea stars John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata.

Clattenburg has been accused by the European champions of making offensive comments, which are understood to have been interpreted as racist, during their acrimonious Barclays Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Chelsea lodged a formal complaint with the match delegate that saw the FA announce an investigation and Clattenburg stood down from officiating for a week. However the police then became involved after the Society of Black Lawyers demanded they look into whether a criminal offence had been committed.

The man behind the mooted black players' breakaway union, Peter Herbert, sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), which read: "The Society of Black Lawyers wishes to record the incident that took place at Chelsea FC.

"Our information is that racist remarks were directed at John Mikel Obi and at Juan Mata. If so, that is wholly unacceptable in any circumstances.

"Although this matter may be investigated by the FA, it is appropriate that the MPS independently see if a racially-aggravated offence has occurred."

The police confirmed they had received the letter on Monday night but it is understood it was by no means certain an investigation would follow.

It is reported by the Daily Mail that Chelsea's players claim to have heard Clattenburg call Mata a "Spanish t**t", as well as abusing Mikel.

An FA statement read: "The FA has begun an investigation relating to allegations made following Sunday's fixture at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Manchester United (Sunday 28 October 2012).

"The FA will make no further comment at this time."

It has been confirmed that Clattenburg will not referee a Premier League game this weekend. The governing body said that "the intense level of scrutiny would detract from the match and be unfair to the clubs and fans."

Meanwhile, the referees' union has pledged its "full support" to Clattenburg. Prospect said in a statement: "Prospect is committed to helping to eradicate racism in football and in society generally. In the context of that commitment, Prospect is offering full support to Mark Clattenburg in relation to the allegations made against him."

The statement continued: "It is now important that the allegations are fully investigated through the proper process as quickly as possible.

"We will be making no further comment at this stage."

Mikel's agent and Chelsea refused to comment further on the matter but the club did confirm they had decided against holding a press conference to preview Wednesday night's Capital One Cup clash against United.

The Red Devils were similarly taciturn, although it is understood they were unaware whether any of their players heard Clattenburg's allegedly "inappropriate language" and could act as witnesses.

It is unclear how many Chelsea players witnessed what transpired but almost certain to be called upon should there be an investigation are Clattenburg's assistants and fourth official, with each connected by a microphone and earpiece throughout the game.

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll told BBC Radio Five Live: "If a comment of a racial nature was made, I think it should be reported and I think assistant referees will report it because there's no place for it."

Jeff Winter, who retired as a referee shortly before Clattenburg became a member of the top flight's Select Group, claimed the official's career was doomed if he was proven to have used racist language towards a player.

"If a match official has used racial insults or language to a player then he's for the high jump," Winter said. "He won't be getting a four-match or an eight-match ban, it'll probably be the end of his career, but that is if indeed he did say anything."

Leaders Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end when Javier Hernandez scored a dubious-looking 75th-minute winner for United after Clattenburg had shown red cards to Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres in quick succession in the final half hour.

How can this take so long ffs?! Get 20 people in to look at all the different camera angles and interview Mikel, (Mata?), Clattenburg and the other officials. Compare what they said, if there's no evidence apart from Mikel's and Mata's (highly likely) then drop the case and we can move on. Job done in a day.

He's one of the best on mine. Younger, cooler and better looking than all the rest. Only Webb challenges him for me.

Two Chelsea players are claiming he called Mikel a monkey. I'd love it if Cole is one and the FA ignore him again :hysterics:

Ferguson: No way Clattenburg abused Mikel

Sir Alex Ferguson has said it is "unthinkable" that referee Mark Clattenburg used inappropriate language towards Chelsea's John Obi Mikel.

Chelsea made a formal complaint over Clattenburg's behaviour during last Sunday's 3-2 Premier League defeat to Manchester United, but Ferguson said he "refuses to believe" the referee is guilty.

"In the modern climate I just refuse to believe it," he said in his Friday morning press conference. "I don't believe Mark would make any comments like that. It's unthinkable."

Ferguson added: "I've never had a player come to me in the last 15 years and say a referee has sworn at him."

Chelsea's complaint to the FA concerns a confrontation between Clattenburg and Mikel - reports claim Chelsea believe the official used the word "monkey".

A club statement said: "This is a result of a thorough investigation carried out by the club, and led by outside legal counsel, of all information available to us including interviews with a number of players and staff."

The Metropolitan Police is also investigating the incident.

However, Chelsea have come under fire from managers, with Ferguson joining Arsene Wenger and Sam Allardyce in voicing their misgivings over their actions.

Wenger said on Thursday: "My opinion is that I prefer, when I didn’t behave well, that I have an explanation with the referee at the end of the game, or on another day, than going public with little proof.

"I'm not a great believer in making these stories public. One of the great things in sports is tolerance, forgiveness and explanation internally and I think it should stay like that.

"It can happen that a referee doesn’t behave well. I do not say they are angels, but it is always better to sort it out in the room."

It is also believed Clattenburg's fellow officials, who had an audio link to the referee during the match, will defend the 37-year-old.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for a man who appeared to make a monkey gesture towards Danny Welbeck in Chelsea's Capital One Cup match against United on Wednesday night.

Chelsea travel to Swansea City on Saturday, when John Terry completes his four-match ban after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand last season.

Police end probe into Clattenburg allegations

Police have dropped an investigation into referee Mark Clattenburg's alleged use of inappropriate language during the recent Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester United after no victim came forward.

Scotland Yard said an investigation was launched into alleged comments during the match at Stamford Bridge on October 28.

Police said in a statement: "Inquiries were made and no victims have come forward. The matter will remain as a recorded incident. Without a victim and/or any evidence that any offence has been committed, the matter cannot currently be investigated."

The statement continued: "If the situation changes and a victim and/or evidence to support an allegation of a crime comes to police attention, then further inquiries will, if appropriate, be made."

The 37-year-old referee returned to training with the top-flight Select Group of referees last weekend for the first time since Chelsea's complaint.

Chelsea have alleged that Clattenburg used a term understood to have been interpreted as racist towards midfielder John Obi Mikel.

The official strenuously denies having done so.

Clattenburg and referees chief Mike Riley decided jointly that he should not be in charge of matches while the case has been going on.

The FA is yet to make a decision on the matter after conducting its own investigation.
