Sort of tough one for me.

Rooney has more of an all-round game, he does need to work on his finishing and scoring more goals which is pretty essential for a striker! He will get better in the next 3 years there's no doubt about that, his finishing and goalscoring will be improving and in 3 years time, I think we will all look at him as a 25-30 goal per season striker and with everything else he offers, he would then simply have to be considered a top class striker, possibly even world class as he would then offer more than nearly all strikers. He seems like someone that all proper strikers would excel alongside, fairly consistent goalscoring is really all that's standing in his way of being truly class.

Arshavin seems like a really class act, he impressed a lot in the Euros apart from against Spain where he was awful. Judging on last season in the PL, he looks to be definitely better than Rooney. His technical ability is at a level Rooney is unlikely to ever get to, his finishing looks pretty neat aswell. Lots of skillful players like him tend to over-do it a lot, trying too hard to make things look good, but Arshavin seems to be a bit more ruthless and direct when the time is right, I like that.

The thing is, we have to see Arshavin play a full season in the PL. He failed consistency-wise at the Euros and Wenger, before he signed him cited that consistency might be a problem for him so even though he scored a fair few goals in the league last season, we don't know whether he can outscore Rooney in a full season. You can look at really simplistically and say well he scored 6 in 12, so that means he will score nearly 20 in a full season but 4 of those goals came in 1 game and even though he has showed us even in just that single game that his finishing is nice, 4 goals in a game is not a common occurance, even for Henry or RvN. So in his other 11 games, he scored just 2 goals. Now I think it's a bit harsh to criticise Rooney for not scoring enough goals when Arshavin, bar a freak 4 goals at Anfield (not saying it was lucky but well, it won't happen again!) has a similar record or even worse, yet his goalscoring is not criticised one bit. Just looking on Wiki and he hasn't got a very handsome record of scoring goals himself, I'm sure Rooney's is much better. He seems to chip in with a lot of assists though but then Rooney notches up a fair few each season too!

In some aspects of the game, from what I've seen of Arshavin, he looks btter than Roooney no doubt about it, but the same can be said for Rooney, he does some things Arshavin doesn't and offers things that the Russian doesn't. I would say Arshavin is a better footballer but I will wait until he plays a full season before giving a defintive answer on this. Both are very good players who can deliver special performances but one is a bit unproven for a full season and the other still can't show his full potential as much as he should, so it's too close to call.

Thing is, while Rooney has never let the world alight with his scoring, he still knocks in a considerable amount. Last season he netted 20 times for United, and was prolific for England. I fully expect him to improve on this total this season following Ronaldo's departure, simply because the team will probably be based more around him rather than him trying to fit into a team made for Ronaldo to shine. In other words, I don't think we'll see him out on the left that much.
I'd like to draw your attention to this piece of world-class posting.

When Rooney actually proves his worth by scoring goals I'll recognise him as a top striker. He doesn't score, and he's playing in the easiest side to score goals in.

My post was pretty accurate aswell and I was saying Rooney would hit 25+ goals all Summer.

Arshavin had not yet fully convinced me but there's no doubting his ability and all Rooney needed to overtake him was goals and that's all come true.

Brilliant!

We all know Ant will never recognize Rooney as a top player, there will always be something he's missing, or if he fails to think of one he will just say, he scores tap-ins and defenders make it easy for him.

I meant scoring goals in his current role, not being shifted to lone striker and scoring penalties. Waste of space.

How many pens has Rooney scored this season? And how does it compare to the likes of RvN, Henry, Ronaldo, Shearer in the seasons where they actually got credit for their goalscoring exploits?

All I know is that there can't be much in the difference and I find it disgusting that it never really gets mentioned when other players are concerned but as soon as it's Rooney it's used against him. I mean take away the pens from Ronaldo's tally last season and Rooney probably had more goals than him, yet that was a fairly good season for Ronaldo.

Lampard aswell, how many penalties does he bang in every season? And does it take anything away from the fact he scores 20 goals per season? No I didn't think so.

People, especially Ant, are very harsh on Rooney. You don't need to say he's world class or anything but surely by now people must be able to accept that he's one of the best forwards / strikers in Europe.

Why can't people just accept Rooney is out and out world class and be done with it? When he gets the ball away fans are just gripped by fear.

Winner.

as SAFC pointed out. me and him are season ticket holders of our respected clubs so pretty much see every player first hand in the premier league and i hate the fact of having to face Rooney at least twice a year let alone just the once. Ronaldo was the best player in the world but Rooney was and still is far more important to Man U than Ronaldo could ever be IMO.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
