Manchester United winger Nani is set to miss the start of the new league season after dislocating his shoulder in the Community Shield defeat by Chelsea.

"He's out for a while, the worry is that we couldn't put it back in place," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after his side lost on penalties.

After scoring the game's opening goal, Nani had to come off just past the hour to be replaced by Antonio Valencia.

Nani dislocated his shoulder after he fell following a John Terry tackle.

The Portuguese winger, who is expected to take on greater responsibility following the departure of Ronaldo to Real Madrid, had an impressive game for United with his close ball control and speed troubling Chelsea in the first half.

Nani's goal came from a superb shot when he cut in from the left after 10 minutes, but Chelsea recovered to take a 2-1 lead through goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Frank Lampard, before Wayne Rooney's injury equaliser sent the game to a shoot-out with Carlo Ancelotti's side triumphing 4-1.

Nani's injury will rule him of Portugal's friendly against Liechtenstein on 12 August.

Terrible news, it better not be for long ffs, he's so creative and important to our attacking football...

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Fucking amazing tackle from Terry. Won the ball perfectly and put one of his title contender's brightest sparks out of action.

Job done.

Winner.

Wow. United now have very little creativity on the flanks. If I was SAF I'd play a 4312 with Rooney behind Berba and Owen, with Anderson, Flethcher, and Scholes in CM.

That's a possibility alright. The team will be definitely more central with Ronaldo gone. We will be more like say 2004/05 when Ronaldo wasn't a winger in a 4-4-3 and we had Rooney and RvN feeding off Scholes and playing a central sort of game.

Ronaldo played mostly central last season from what I saw. He couldn't be arsed to run at players so SAF moved him through the middle.

Yeah but he was really the key man in us playing a 4-4-3 wide sort of formation. With him gone and that outlet not there and with Valancia after been signed it's clear Fergie is going with a more centrally orientated team. I think it's be a regular 4-4-2 on most occasions. Always with 2 strikers, we have 4 different kind of strikers ad none are designed to play out wide apart from Rooney who Fergie has clearly stated, will play more centrally.

Valencia and Park are normal wide players who offer more defensibvely than Ronaldo ever could and Fergie will be TRYING to mould Nani into something like that although he will be encouraging him going forward first and foremost. If he's playing him on the left he has to get him to do more defensively because of Evra's surging runs forward.

Dag said a couple days back that Valencia needs to mix up his runs because it's too one dimensional and it was on display once again today, Cashley just knew he wanted to go down the wing everytime and snuff him out at every oppurtunity they was facing each other . With Nani out for several weeks Park and Valencia needs to up there creative influence on the final third and be a force on the wings until he come back because I truly believe that Nani is going to be a force this season with the departure of Ronaldo but I have alot of faith in the rest of the wingers :)
